How did you book your NYC trip?

We are planning a trip the week before Easter.  This is when some schools have spring break so I want to book early enough to get a good deal and reservation.  We already bought theater tickets for Lion King on Wednesday.  I am looking for a hotel for 3 nights mid week.  Any idea where to get the best deal?  Do you usually just sift through trip advisor comments.  It looks like we are going to have to spend about 250/300 a night.  Does this sound about right?  I am not too concerned about a fancy hotel, just clean and centrally located.

Re: How did you book your NYC trip?

  • I'm in the process of looking for a NYC hotel and I'm finding that the hotel websites have some better deals than the travel sites. The prices I'm finding are just about $250-300 for President's Day weekend, though.

  • For most of my past trips to NYC in the past two years, we have used Priceline to book a hotel. If you use www.betterbidding.com, you can see a list of the hotels in each bidding area as well as what winning bids for the dates around when you will be there. You should be able to get a decent rate for during the week.

I know when I went last April, I paid $150/night for the W Hotel in Midtown East and that was over a weekend.

  • We went the second week in December, paid 106/night for a 3 star (Hotelpenn.com) great location, run down rooms, but they were clean! (Saturday-Tuesday)

I also stayed at the Park Central (4 star) for 99/night MLK weekend a couple years ago. (Saturday-Monday)

I personally refuse to pay for anything over 200, especially during the week.

  • I've always hotwired hotels in NYC with good luck. I've gotten good deals ($130/night) in pretty nice (mostly chain) hotels.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • We just stayed at the Holiday Inn Soho for about $180/night via an award stay.  The regular rates for Dec 30 - Jan 1 at the property were about $900.  If you're interested in this type of strategy, see:

I researched many options before going this route.  So there are certainly ways to reduce your $250-300 per night estimate.
