Disney Cruise-Thoughts? (Cruise ship-Dream)

Hi all!

We have never been on a cruise. My husband, myself and our 18m old daughter will be taking a little vacation for my birthday in Feb. We thought maybe a disney cruise--weve found a 4 night cruise we would take, it is on the Dream Ship. So I was wondering if you liked the disney cruise(was it worth the extra $$?) Is there anything for a 20 month old to do?(any pools?) How was the food?

Also--They have transfers to the ship from hotels?(how do you find out which hotels work with the cruise line!?)

Thank you so much!!!!!

  • You can stay at any Disney hotel and have a transfer to the cruise.

disboards.com has a cruise message board where you can ask/get lots of information.

  • Not all Disney hotels do the transfers, but you can stay at any of them and take a cab to one that does pick ups.  I know that Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Wilderness Lodge and Contemporary do pick-ups as well as either the Swan or Dolphin.  There are a few others as well.

Disney cruises are fantastic.  However, I cannot tell you whether or not the kids' activities are good for a 20 month old as we've never done one with kids.  There are plenty of kids activities though.  I'm just not sure for a 20 month old.  The food is good and service is top notch.  Is the price difference worth it?  In some instances, yes.  However, we opted to do a Holland America Baltic cruise a few summers back over Disney because the price difference for the same itinerary was $5,000 for two of us.  It was not worth that much to us.  If it were a few hundred dollars more, we would have done Disney.  I especially love Castaway Cay which is Disney's private island.  It is so much better than the other private islands used by cruise lines.

  • DH and I went on a three night cruise on the Dream this past September and had a fantastic time! We went to celebrate our first anniversary and everything about the cruise was top line-service, food, entertainment, etc, everything meticulously run so yes I totally feel they are worth spending the extra $$$ compared to some of the other lines (Carnival, NCL). As for your daughter, there is a pool for toddlers-Nemo's Reef Wet Play area along with various childcare options/play areas. Character greetings are also in abundance. The food on board is very good/lots of options and Disney offers the rotational dining program which allows you to eat dinner at each of their three main restaurants.

I have tons of reviews and pictures in my blog (link in siggy below).

We just did the cruise and arranged transfers directly from the airport to the port but I know they also offer transfers if you're doing the land/sea option, just not sure which hotels they go to.

  • I have been on Disney cruise 3 times. We went on the Dream in November. The 20 month old can not swim in the pools with swim diapers on but they have a really cool spray/splash area for kids where she could play.  You can also pay for nursery care ($10 an hour I think) if you want adult only time.

I was not as impressed with the food this last trip. It was all good but nothing was amazing.

I live local so no idea about transfers.

I have a 5 year old. She loves the kids club so weed have decided its worth the extra money for Disney over other lines (we took advantage of the discount for rebooking on board for another cruise this year).

  • thank you for the help! I feel like I have so much to find out and make sure I do/have before we go!

We dont have kids but yes-there's tons for kids to do. chekc out the website or contact them and ask. even better-they have just as much for adults only and keept eh 2 separate.

Also--They have transfers to the ship from hotels?(how do you find out which hotels work with the cruise line!?) ask the cruise line :) we stayed at the polynesian. it may just be disney hotels-not sure. check on that.
