Re: Anyone ever cook Indian food?

  • no, i still haven't cooked that dalh or dall or dal that we talked about!

my friend spent 3 months in india in the summer and 2 at the beginning of the year and she told me to buy cumin and turmeric.. which i did.. i tried them and i can't get into them. cumin is what i would use if i didn't have chili powder..

i've only tried a couple indian dishes and i don't think i'm the biggest fan, but i'd love to try more!

  • W has a huge Indian cookbook and cooks from it a lot. She has a couple of favorites; I'll ask her when she gets home. It's good stuff!

  • niq - I'd love to know!

My go to is chicken tikka masala.

This weekend I'm going to do lamb tikka masala and Palak Murgh which is a spinach chicken recipe that I tried at Kalia India here in town.

  • I do butter chicken modifying this recipe, because D loves butter chicken: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/chicken-makhani-indian-butter-chicken/detail.aspx

An Indian coworker of mine ate some and took some home to her husband and they both loved it.

I used to try to cook indian all the time and it didn't seem right. Then someone gave me a recipe for tandori chicken where you cook all these spices in oil to bloom them, then add to yogurt and some other stuff and marinade chicken in it for 24 hours before grilling. Garam Masala is what I was missing. You can get it in the spice section. Yummy. It's the best indian spice. Kind of sweet smelling but you use it savory.
Garam Masala is key!  You can buy it in the bulk spice section if you don't want to commit to a whole jar.
