S/O Redbox...I miss Blockbuster

Maybe it was just the town I grew up in (where there wasn't much to do and I wasn't a partier), but Blockbuster was so crowded almost every Friday and Saturday night. We'd go as a family and pick out movies or I'd go w/ my BFF frequently; almost every weekend...We almost always ran into friends doing the same thing. It sounds silly, but it was such a part of my childhood/teenage years, I am kind of sad my kids won't know what it's like to walk up and down the aisles looking for a good movie to watch!

Ok, that sounds really silly now that I'm reading it...but maybe it's because I'm such a "visual" person that I really enjoyed looking for movies that way.

Well said. I didn't experience blockbuster this way but I can understand why you miss it.

  • I miss them too. I worked for the company for quite a while, and I remember the crowded Friday nights. But I also remember it getting smaller and smaller. The "no late fee" scam ticked off a lot of people, and it lost a good amount of the client base. I have Netflix and Hulu, but it's just not the same at all. I miss perusing the aisles (as a customer and employee) and finding random boxes that looked like an awesome movie to see. I'm a visual and tactile person, so staring at my tv screen to look for movies often nothing registers.
  • *not to mention Redbox, Hulu and Netflix don't have candy!
  • We still have tons of Blockbusters here. I never go to them, but they're all over.

  • We have 2 Blockbusters in the area. H and I also have a Blockbuster account that works like Netflix, but we can return movies to the store. It works out better for us.

Totally agree. I feel that way about shopping a lot. The fabric of clothes can look very different online than in person.

    Ditto this!

  • Oh yeah, I forgot about the "no late fee" thing...I think my fam fell for that one and eventually led to them not going much anymore (they lived in MD at the time anyways, wasn't as big here by then.)

  • Ya know, J was just talking about this the other day.  He mentioned the same thing - how he misses just walking up and down the aisles looking for something good to rent.  Granted, I had to bring up the fact that we just don't have the time to do that anyway given our two kids but I guess that's not what he wanted to hear.  :-/

We have a Blockbuster very close to us, but the rental fees are just ridiculous and J got pissed about something they did/said/whatever a couple years ago and just cancelled our account.  We make do with Redbox and Netflix.  Though Netflix my be cancelled by next month... we're STILL unsure.

You know what I miss?  Actually WANTING to see movies.  Tonight my mom saw some preview on TV for some movie that I have zero interest in (that's beside the point here) and she was all like wow that's gonna be GOOD - I want to SEE THAT! and I thought to myself - gee, I can't even recall the last time I got excited about a movie... like really feeling that I WANT to see one particular one (not including Harry Potter - that's a given, duh).  Sometimes I see a preview or commercial for one, or read a review or someone mentions one and I think, yeah, sure that'd be interesting.  But then I forget about it five minutes later and six months later I see another mention of it and I'm like wow.. ya know I recall that title... I'd watch that.  But then I never do.  I have yet to see: Bridesmaids, Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher, Crazy Stupid Love, Moneyball, The Help, Water for Elephants, Our Idiot Brother, Super8, Tree of Life, The Change Up.  and I totally just browsed the Redbox site to get THOSE titles. Anyone else feel this way?

  • Nola I hear what you're saying with that too. Granted, I've seen several of the movies on your list, but we don't have kids. Movies arent something we do all the time so it comes in waves. When there is a movie I really really want to watch, I set a reminder for redbox immediately from my phone or Internet so I don't forget to rent it. I did this with the help bc I wanted to watch that movie badly!

  • I totally feel ya on the whole "nothing looks good" front. The things J and I get excited about is when the independant or art theatres play something we already know. One place does midnight movies on Friday and Saturday, and it's old campy stuff like Repo Man or Godzilla. Another film is playing a retrospective of Miyazaki (My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle) and I'm thrilled about that. Nothing new looks even mildly amusing (although Sherlock Holmes rocked.. but I was brought to it, I didn't choose it)
  • I miss looking for movies too!  It was always fun to go pick out movies when I was little (although it was usually at a local rental shop, not Blockbuster).

I do like trying old movies on netflix and then being able to stop them if they're awful and not feel bad about it.  If I rented a movie from BB in the past and hated it, I would feel guilty not finishing it since I paid for it.
