The last couple of times I have flown long distances I have swollen like crazy. Hands, feet, legs, ankles, you name it. I make sure to keep up my fluid intake and eat healthy before and during the flight. I move around and stretch as much as possible too.
We are going to Ireland in March and I am looking to prevent the swelling as much as possible. Any ideas? Articles for reference?
My riding boots that I normally wear when I travel probably will not fit if I swell up like normal, so I might even have to buy new shoes and break them in before the trip.
Re: Swelling when traveling?
My feet swell quite a bit on flights over 8 hours. I've never really found a way to prevent it, so I just deal with it. This usually means wearing shoes that I can either lace or leave unfastened (my work shoes have a small zipper that I leave open until my feet go back to normal).
I have an inflatable footrest that I use sometimes, especially on overnight flights. It probably helps a little, but I use it more for comfort.
I did finally buy a pair of compression socks recently, because I was starting to worry about DVT being on so many long-haul flights in the last few months. I think they did help a bit with the swelling, so maybe that's something you could consider.
Compression socks! I have the same problem on long flights and sometimes it can be pretty painful, especially since I'm a horrible sleeper on planes and I'm awake and aware of it.
I bought the cheapest pair of compression socks I could find on amazon because we were going to be in flight for 16 hours from O'hare to Hong Kong. I figured they might help and, if they didn't, I didn't waste too much money on them. They were a fairly light compression according to reviews and they still made a very big difference for me. I put them on as soon as we got on the plane and put a pair of comfy, fuzzy socks over them to keep my feet warm. I had no swelling and my legs were much more comfortable than normal. I will definitely use them for any long-haul flights!
Compression Socks like they sell for runners? Any specific recs?
I bought these - http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-Medical-Nurse-Compression-Socks/dp/B002WJHEK6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325536570&sr=8-2
I'm willing to bet they're not as nice as the ones for runners, but the price is also a lot better. They worked well for me.
I actually just picked up a pair at a drug store. I was shopping for an ankle brace, and the travel compression socks were right next to the braces, so I decided to just pick up a pair.
You can do a search someplace like Amazon for "flight socks" and you'll get a few results. You can also find them listed on travel-specific sites like Magellan's.
