Game of Thrones watchers - I have a question
DH and I just watched the first episode of this show and I absolutely hated it. We never watched it when it first aired, and I've never read the books, so I had zero idea of what to expect. Medieval fantasy is already not really my favorite thing, but I wasn't expecting all the...well, rape. My heart absolutely broke for that poor young girl who was married off to that beasty dude. But I know this series has a huge fan base, and I also know that HBO likes to start a series with a shocking
episode and develop from there, so my question is - does the rapiness reduce as the series goes
on? Do the female characters come into their own?

Yeah, you can't base the series on one episode. Hell, you can't even base that character or the marriage she had just entered into on that one episode (I have to imagine you're referring to Dennaryes, otherwise I'm lost). She definitely "comes into her own" as the show progresses, and even more so as the series goes forward. There are quite a few powerful (and potentially powerful) girls/women in the series, which is one of the reasons it's really awesome. GRR Martin has no problems giving the ladies their due (both good and bad, honestly).
That being said, if you hated the entire episode, the series probably isn't for you. It's been awhile since I saw the first episode, but I know for a fact that "rape" was not what I got from it. Lots of sex, yes, but not lots of rape. Not saying there wasn't rape (I think I'm more inclined to refer to it differently knowing more of the story, but to each his own) but there is SO much more than that. You might want to give it another episode or two before you give up, but if fantasy isn't you bag anyway, I'm not sure what you're expecting. It only gets more "fantasy" the further in you go.
ETA: (After reading other post) - She is about 13 in the books when she gets married to Drogo, so yeah, HBO definitely altered it for the viewer's comfort (that and so they could show her naked). They actually aged all the younger characters, I'm pretty sure due to the eventual sex and/or power situations most find themselves in.

I'm reading the books and loved the series (watching the show got me into the books)...
You are speaking of Dany and Drogo. To answer your questions:
1) No, there aren't any more rapes as I remember in the first season of the show but there is sex and violence but not necessarily together...
2) Yes. The female characters are strong. GRR Martin does a super good job of keeping the viewer/reader on their toes. You never know what will happen--and quite frankly that is part of the appeal of the story for me...there are some times where I have grown fond of a character only to have something bad happen to them! I couldn't believe it--that's good writing I think...in reality not everyone you want to survive does--the good people don't always get the best things..and he does an amazing job of portraying that.
That is good to know. And to clarify, it wasn't accurate to say I hated the entire episode. I posted just after we watched it, and I what really bothered me was how the women were treated, as property to be traded and used as the men desired. Not the standard violence, betrayal, etc. So if that changes a bit I can deal. I'm still not sure it's for me but I can give it a few episodes. Thanks!

this!! I thought it was going to be something I hated, I love it! I have been meaning to get the books and read them so I just ordered them, now I am excited to have something to read this weekend
I was shocked at the first episode too (mostly by all the female chests being shown...wowzers) and even posted here about it and I was assured that it gets better and it does.
You should watch the first season, then read the book (or listen to it, they have a good reader). It's awesome! I'm reading the second book now just because I have to know what happens and I'm curious to see if the series follows the story as closely as it has.
I haven't watched the show yet, but I am on book 4 of the series and yes, the female characters are quite strong. Some more so than others, but some really do come into their own as others have mentioned.
I can't wait to see it. I'm just waiting on the release and netflix.

Wait, I'm confused.
I haven't seen the show, but I am reading the books. I just started book 4.
I thought that after Viserys more less sold Daenerys to Drogo....or despite that, I should say....I thought Daenarys had sex with Drogo willingly, as his wife. And from then on their relationship got better.
Am I wrong? Or did they change it from the book to the show and Daenerys was raped by him instead?
The women in the books get much, much stronger as it goes along. As the story develops, so do they. Especially Daenerys.

In fact, I did notice in these books that there is quite a bit of (too much) rape as whole, but none of it actually happens to any of the main characters. Daenarys, Catelyn, Arya, Sansa, Cersei, Brienne...none of them are raped, are they? Any book readers remember?
I haven't seen it since it aired, but I do remember it being an uncomfortable scene. Kind of like, "You're my wife, I'm mounting you, ready or not" and she looks like she's both humiliated and in pain. If I remember correctly she wasn't kicking and screaming, but she definitely was not into it, more like gritting her teeth and treating it like the price she had to pay for the arranged marriage.
Stick with it. The TV series is incredible. I've not read the books.
Although she is talking about the books, I agree with Amy Poehler's assessment of the series in general.
And, yes, the female characters ultimately rock. Like a lot.
