Any restaurant recs for Houston?

Re: Winged

  • Yes, what type of food or price range are we talking? More casual or fancy?

    Are you coming to town?

  • Type doesn't matter and price doesn't either.  We'll both be coming from office work environments (me via plane) Thursday, so we won't look like total bums.  But we'll also be in Houston for the day-night on Sunday-Monday.

Yes!  Seeing my fauxmance partner.  :)

  • oooh, a tryst!

If you are interested in a GTG let me know.

OK, these are all in the downtown area. I am not sure where you are coming from.

Brennan's- New Orleans classic restaurant. This is the only non New Orleans located one. The interior is very romantic and they have yummy food and amazing Banana's Foster!

Brenner's on the Bayou- This is a beautiful location and such a pretty restaurant although it can be very loud. So, if you want more intimate and quiet, I would stay away. Huge portions

Sorrento- This is my new favorite favorite place. I seriously love it, the food is amazing and the service is spectacular.

Gravitas- one of our favorite funky little neighborhood places

  • A gtg would be lovely, but I get the feeling I will be occupied the entire trip.  He leaves on 1/12 for a long-term job overseas, so this will be his big hurrah send-off, and possibly the last time I see him. (I haz a sad about that).

Thanks for the recs!  I will report back and let you know where we end up going.  ;)

    imageimage
  • Oh wow. yes, I can understand the sad. Are you staying someplace fun? Any other plans?
  • I'm not sure what we're doing, exactly.  I know we'll be at his house for a day or two (Beaumont), but will be going here, there and everywhere seeing the TX sights.  He's booked the room in Houston for Sunday night, so I have no clue where that will be (probably near Hobby airport).  I wouldn't mind if we never left the house.  ;)

I'm just looking forward to the fun. I am hoping to come back out (maybe in March for my 30th) to do gtgs w/WW girls, so maybe we can plan a gtg then.

    imageimage
  • I hope it's not near Hobby. That's kind of a shady area. And downtown is just 15 min away. But I am sure he is aware of that.

Are their other WW girls here? I know jules was in NOLA and sparkman is back and forth between here and NOLA, but I am not sure if she was a WWer.

  • He mentioned that.  I think he did say something about downtown.  Anything is closer than damn Beaumont.

Jules is in NOLA - as are a few others.  MinM and NOLABridesmaid are north of you, near Dallas.  Barbie is in Houston.

    imageimage
  • cool. Well, let me know. i know Jules already and have met up with her in the past, but not the others.
  • I will keep you posted.  ;)

  • And have a good weekend. Seriously. Enjoy your time.
  • Oh, I plan on it!  My g/f said, "I hope you come back with a Texan's walk, but never see a horse."

We'll have a nice time.  I know he is looking forward to it, too.  He already has meals planned to cook for me and has been making me some sort of gift.  He even said if it looks like crap I am welcome to laugh at it.  I like this guy - never takes himself too seriously.

  • That sucks that he has to go away then.

It's sweet that he is planning so much.

And if you are looking for an intimate bar experience try this http://www.marfrelesshouston.com/

It is this place that looks like a hole in the wall from the outside. But apparently, it is where all the richie riches take their mistresses to get away from the wives. Very low lighting and intimate seating. Also, I have heard that there is no marking on the CC receipts or bills as to where it is to keep the wives from knowing. Anyway, there is a lot of rumor about it as a romantic hideaway.

  • Nice rec!  Maybe we will slip in there for a nightcap.  :)  No need for hiding, though.  He only has a mother and sisters and I have been told they stalk me on FB plenty.

  • Obviously not winged, but I also have a few recs:

La Vista - the shrimp n grits are to die for!

    www.fatbutter.com

Backstreet Cafe - the snagria is so yummy!

    www.backstreetcafe.com

Taste of Texas - great steak but I love their salad bar and their baked potato soup so much!

Zelko Bistro - small, quiet restaurant - lots of yummy things on the menu.

winged - i had a friend get kicked out of marfreless for getting "too romantic" upstairs - it is a cool little place though!

  • I didn't think you could get "too romantic" at Marfreless, that's the whole thing! snort.

Anyway, I have been wanting to try Zelko for a while.

  • haha!  We really liked it and it's close to us so we have gone a few times now - i love the atmosphere.  If you have never gone to La Vista - you should def go there too - one of my friends sends me a thank you text when she goes bc she loves it so much too - lol!
  • La Vista seems so far away. We are stuck in the loop.
  • still totally worth it - promise :-)

you been to hubcap yet? It's near Cedar Creek.

Can you tell I am hungry . . . I skipped lunch and B is home marinating steaks for us.

  • All of these menus have me starving.  Mmmmm, food.

  • No, I haven't but I work near Cedar Creek. I love all the Creeks.

And nicole, if there is one thing Houston does well, it is food.

  • ok - last rec - benjy's

    www.benjys.com

everything i have had there has been yummy!

  • I'm packing my fat pants.

  • Well as an aside, this motivated me to look up vegetarian restaurants in Houston. The Houston veggie scene puts Austin to deep deep shame. Keep it weird, whatever Austin!
    image Guess who?
