Knitting v Crocheting- what's the difference?

I want to learn something new for 2012 but I'm not really sure what the difference between the two is. I think of knitting like making a sweater and crocheting like making a scarf or blanket but I could be completely wrong on that!! I'm more interested in whichever one you make blankets with. I need something to occupy my time instead of the Nest lol.

TIA

Re: Knitting v Crocheting- what's the difference?

  • Kitting uses two needles (I think some knitting is done with more than two),  and crocheting uses a single needle/hook, so the resulting stitches look/are different.

You can make scarves, blankets, etc., with either technique.  My grandmother made afghans for us using crochet, but one of my daughters got a baby blanket from her that was knitted.

  • I'm pretty sure the FAQs cover this.

You can knit or crochet any of the igems you mentioned.

  • Great info in the FAQs. I didn't even think to look there. Thanks Dr. L!!
  • Knitting tends to be stretchier than crochet, so knitting is great for something that should have some stretch -- like a sweater -- and crochet is good for something you want to hold its shape -- like a blanket.  You could use either for a scarf, and I think that's a great starter project.
