BW Older Kids: Potty Training

I think it's time to get something as she's showing some interest.    What is better, something that's an 'insert' for the real potty or a smaller one of their own?  Either?

Re: BW Older Kids: Potty Training

  • We got a small potty for Liam, since they have a potty chair at school and he was already using that. He ok with it at home...our problem is timing. Unfortunately, he tells us "potty, poop" immediately after he has gone, usually right after sitting on the potty for awhile.

    GL with Jane!!

  • We started both Lily and Logan out on their little potty, but it got old real quick. After about 1 week of using their little potty, they wanted to sit on their little Elmo insert toilet seat. Logan just recently started taking the Elmo seat off and sitting on the regular toilet seat. So, both worked for us but I think my kids preferred the insert!

Hmm, maybe this will help us too. We are finding it harder to keep him on his potty but maybe the insert attachment will work.

  • In the beginning Abby would only use a little potty.  Once she started using the potty at school (around 2.5) she would only sit on the big potty with the insert.  Once she was PTed (2.9) she sits on the regular potty with no insert.
  • I do have to add that with the insert, there's no clean up. You get to flush the toilet and that's it. With the little potty, esp with Logan, it's a pain to clean the whole thing out every single time they go. So I was much happier with the insert as well!

  • We have a little potty. It has the option to use it as an insert on the real one, but we've never done it. I actually prefer the little one because she can just go whenever she wants and I don't have to come help her. She likes the independence of telling me she just went on her own. She occasionally asks to sit on the "big potty", but I'll just hold her on it.
  • Z pee'd on the potty tonight, the first time in a few months. I think it was all luck, and the fact when his weeny hit cold air he went.

We have a little potty, he shows no real interst in it. Our pedi said not to worry about trying to potty train a boy who's barely 2 in the middle of winter so - whatever - we're in no hurry and are going with the "You gotta go potty" "No" "Okay" plan right now.

  • I have no experience here yet obviously but we did just pick up a potty this past week. Mads has been showing interest while we're going & has been asking to sit on on the toilet & trying to pull her pants down at times while we're in there. We figured it might be good to just have one in the bathroom for her to check out as she feels comfortable. We picked out the one that we thought looked the most like a real toilet & that also has the option to take the seat off & use as an insert on the toilet too if we want. I think it's made by munchkin?
  • Thanks ladies.

We definitely aren't pushing it at all but she's becoming very aware of poop and pee and asks to sit on the potty so I'd like to have something for her to just, we, sit on ;)

ETA: for a while we've been dumping her poops out of the diaper into the potty, flushing and then washing hands.  She loves it - haha.

  • I think we're going to go with the step-stool and insert route as well. He is super interested and always flushes the toilet for me, etc. but I know it would just be hell to attempt right now with the babies coming and all. Like Liam, he tells us after the fact so I don't think he's quite ready either. And the thought of yet another thing to clean (potty seat) isn't very appealing, lol.
  • We bought Taryn a little potty, but she's doing MUCH better with the seat that sits on the regular toilet.
