Cleaning cat pee HELP!

On Xmas day, one of my cats was pi$$ed we had company and peed in my LOs brand new princess tent. Against my better judgement (I wanted to toss it immediately) I bleached it, cleaned it with vinegar and baking soda and aired it out overnight-- there was no cat pee odor at all so I put it back in my LO's room. Yesterday my male cat (not the original offender) peed in it again and it soaked through to the rug. I obviously tossed the tent and used an enzyme pet stain cleaner then a bissell spot cleaner with pet stain solution-- it still smells a little to me and more scary to me is that my male cat is constantly sniffing around the area. I DO NOT want him to keep marking the area but this is new-ish wall to wall carpeting in a huge room that I really do not want to have to rip up. Any tips? Please and thanks!

Re: Cleaning cat pee HELP!

  • Is there any way to keep the cat out of that room? I had a problem with my new kitten peeing in the same spot for a while. I used nature's miracle from the pet store and kept her out of there for a few weeks. It hasn't been a problem since.
  • Kids & Pets. You can get it at WalMart for $5. It works AMAZINGLY well. Our dog peed on DH's pillow (haha!) and it completely eliminates the odor and stain. GL!

  • Apply nature's miracle. Put an upturned laundry basket over the spot for AT LEAST a week. The enzymes need time to actually break down the organic components of the catpiss. Scrubbing or using a heated spot cleaner will denature the enzymes.

Wait at least 2 weeks before scrubbing/using a heated spot cleaner/etc.
  • We've had a similar problem with our cat, except it was when DH moved in (he did NOT like that idea). We use Nature's Miracle and Comfort Zone with Feliaway plug-in. It has worked wonders for us. Haven't had a problem in a long time.

  • You need an enzymatic cleaner. Your cats can still smell the pee from the first time, so they're going to keep returning to the same spot. The enzyme cleaner will break down the scent so they can't smell it anymore. I prefer Nature's Miracle.
  • Your cat may be trying to ell you that he as an infection, which are very common in male cats. I suggest calling your vet for an appointment and some antibiotics. Pee'ing outside of the litter box is your kitty's way of letting you know something s wrong.
  • Make sure that you put enough enzyme cleaner on that it soaks through to the padding or if it is an area rug clean under the rug too.  My cat, male, had some issues with stones and leaked and the cleaner seemed to do the trick.  In one area where I could not cover it I sat some orange smelling cleaner near it and the cat would not go to the spot most cats hate the smell of citrus.
