On working 24h shifts...
It's not safe. I don't know how medicine allows this to happen. It's not only residents who work them, but attendings and nurse practitioners sometimes too.
Last night wasn't a crazy night, but I was just so exhausted. I felt like an idiot talking to a family at 4am because I was stumbling on my words.
I was naive and didn't think being prego would make these shifts harder, but the fatigue and just overall different feeling does.
When there's an emergency, adrenaline kicks in, but still. Society wouldn't trust a pilot to fly a plane, so the general public needs to help make medicine change. This would of course also mean more personnel and that costs hospitals more money.
OK, whine over.

I feel the same way. On another note, have you told your employer that you are expecting yet? Are they more flexible with female physians who are pregnant?

I'm in the camp of I don't understand it. If I'm in a hospital, you better believe I don't want to be treated by someone who's been awake and working for the past 20 hours. I wouldn't want that person operating a vehicle or other heavy machinery, so why should we want them making snap decisions about a person's health?
Please don't take this as me not trusting your medical ability, I just think its impossible for humans to function properly when going that long with no sleep.

They are trying to make progress with residents. Interns cannot work more than 16 hours straight, but upper years can.
It trickles though. If residents work less, attendings have to work more. I think what ultimately has to happen physicians as a whole have to make a change. Those docs who make $500K need to cut their losses and make the decision to make less so those funds can go towards paying more individuals.
In terms of telling my employer, I've told my superior residents. I'll get 8 weeks off, but otherwise it's the same as everyone else. We understand and cover for each other when we have to leave for appts and such.
Ah, interns, not higher years. Got it.
Where are these docs making $500K? Can they hire DH?
We have quite a few in SW freakin' VA. What are they doing with that money?! haha
