Blood Pressure Question (BR, sorta)

I don't know if this is necessarily only BR because others may have BP complication as well, so...

With N, my OB in WV didn't get concerned with BP issues until the bottom # was over 90. This time, the bottom # has been fine so far but the top # keeps creeping up and now I'm being monitored 2x/week with NST's because "I've thrown BP into the mix."

I haven't felt well this weekend and I've been checking my BP and recording it on my own to bring to the MFM tomorrow. It's been hovering around 154-160/80. I guess my question is at what point does your dr/OB get concerned about high BP? I haven't called yet because whenever I start feeling dizzy or anything I lay down and chug water and recheck it and it's always going down (though is still considered "high" but I think I'll end up with pregnancy induced hypertension again). Plus, the office has been closed so I knew they'd sent me to the hospital and I see my MFM first thing in the morning.

Re: Blood Pressure Question (BR, sorta)

  • That would have concerned my OB.  I think they don't like to see either go up but certain numbers on each are in the elevated then scary zone, kwim?   My lower number I don't think ever went about 90 or so.   With that said, I don't think 150-something over 90 is super super alarming or anything but I'm not surprised about the NSTs, etc.

  • When I was in the 150/90 range my ob sent me to the hospital for monitoring. Not sure if it would be different if my bottom # wasn't up too. I think you're doing the right thing though. Just keep resting and see what they have to say in he morning.
  • I have a horrible memory, so I don't remember exactly what my numbers were at the end, but I want to say it was like 135/92. I just remember that when I told my dad (he's worked in the medical field for years), he said that the upper number seemed fine, but the lower number was high. I didn't get sent for NSTs or anything, but as a result of these numbers, my doctor was talking about induction because I was 38 weeks and my blood pressure had been "creeping up" every visit from 32 weeks on. With that said, my normal BP is like 105/60, so 135/92 is high--for me.

If you're really concerned tonight, call the OB on call just for peace of mind. Otherwise, you're doing all of the right things until your appointment tomorrow.

  • Thanks guys. I've actually felt fine today, with the exception of "over-doing" it at the kids museum. I'm definitely going to have the MFM check it tomorrow (they usually just do ultrasounds for the babes) since I won't see an OB until Friday.

  • That number would have concerned my OB, she was always focused on my top number - when really I don't think it matters top or bottom, if one number is high there is room for concern.

FWIW, I was on a very low dose of BP medication during most of my pregnancy with Zac since I had hypertension, but never pre-E. Surprisingly just the smallest amount made a huge difference in controlling my numbers, maybe that is something to be discussed.

  • 140/90 is technically hypertension, but I'm not sure how that affects pregnant women.

Mine was like 110/70 the whole time I was pregnant, but was 150/100 all of a sudden at my 38 week appt. She sent me straight to the hospital for blood/kidney tests and monitoring. All tests were fine. I was on moderate bedrest for 2 days (still went to work and sat there, but took my BP every hour), then bedrest for 5 days. My BP lowered some, but never dropped. I was having constant contractions for 2 weeks before that, so she thinks that was the trigger. It's like I was stuck in a loop and labor wouldn't go any further (I was 4cm and 90% effaced at 38 weeks), so my body got tired. I was induced at 39 weeks.
