Old Orchard Beach, Maine

Anyone been there?  We are trying to decide if we want to rent a single family cottage or stay at a condo with a pool.  Our children will be 3 and 1 1/2.  How is the beach?  Is the water cold?  Is it really crowded in August?  What about the pier?  Is this a family friendly atmosphere?  How are the prices?  Any recommendations or tips would be appreciated!

Re: Old Orchard Beach, Maine

  • I grew up 20 minutes from OOB. It has a really long beach, amusement area, etc...but it a bit .....honky tonk for lack of a better way to say it. It can be a loud and partying crowd at night if you are near the center.

I would pick York beach or Kennebunkport over OOB but OOB does offer more to do and I am sure if you rented a house it would be away from the loud downtown.

Scarborough is also a nice quiet beach area.

Southern Maine is great in the summer!

  • Also, the water will be cold--it usually is in Maine. But it typically "warms" up in August and kids never seem to mind. My 3 year old always goes in when I won't. But a pool might be a nice option.

The first 2 weeks of August are the busiest. If you can go the first week of Sept, it really quiets down but it woudl be fine in August as well--just more crowded.

  • It'll definitely be crowded in August, but it's a touristy area that's crowded for most of the summer. The water will also be very cold, as it always is in Maine, but not so cold that you can't swim. I agree that a pool might be a good option in case you find that the water is too cold for your liking.

Crowded  Is the water cold? Yes! Is it really crowded in August? See "how is the beach?" What about the pier? The pier is cute :) Is this a family friendly atmosphere? Definitely How are the prices? Prices are about the same as any touristy beach destination - inflated but not insane Any recommendations or tips would be appreciated! I would rent a cottage, you could cook some of your own meals and I just prefer having more privacy and more space for you since you have kids.  The boardwalk is cute, there are fair mid-way type games and a ferris wheel and fireworks every night in the summer.
