Girls weekend in Des Moines

Hi!  I'm an Omaha nestie popping over to see if you girls can help me out...

A couple girlfriends and I are meeting up in Des Moines to celebrate 3 of the 4 of us turning 30 this January.  We'll be there Sat. Jan. 21st.  It sounds like we'll be staying downtown somewhere.  None of us are really familiar with Des Moines though - so we're not quite sure what to plan.  We'll get in Saturday morning some time and one of the girls threw out going to get mani/pedis, then maybe going to a performance at the Civic Center or just go out to eat and hit up a bar or something afterwards.

So - any suggestions of either a mani/pedi place, things to do, or somewhere good to eat/drink in the downtown area?

Thanks for the help!

  • The East Village (across the bridge- still considered downtown I think) is a neat area- if you google 'East Village Spa' I've heard great things about their mani/pedis. Love Centro for an upscale dinner, Dos Rios is upscale Mexican or Fong's Pizza is great for late night drinks and pizza. Have fun!

  • Court Ave. has a lot of bars and places to eat.
  • I recommend staying at the Embassy Suites on the river. They have an evening reception with free drinks and a nice breakfast in the morning. They also have a shuttle that dropped us off at Dos Rios for dinner (not so sure about the availability of this though).

  • The Temple of Performing Arts may have a show worth seeing. Centro is in that building so it would be convenient. Plenty of options for upscale or casul dining. Splash if you like seafood, Django is popular if you like French food, Miyabi 9 in the East Village for sushi. Lucca is also in the East Village. Have fun and welcome to our city!

  • Just wanted to chime in and add Americana to your list of possible restaurants.  It's got a website you can google but is a cool after work bar with good food.

A civic center performance would be cool.  I'm not sure what's playing then.  There will also be tons of places with live bands playing.  Do you have a certain type of music you guys like?  I have a friend who is on the Central Iowa Music League and he lives downtown so I could ask him where the cool shows will be that weekend.

    Thanks for all the feedback!!

And for the last poster - we're all huge fans of DMB - but other than that - any cover band type of music is usually game (70s to today) - whatever!!
