My husband and I are looking to book a beach vacation probably in June. We're currently TTC. Has anyone traveled to the Caribbean or Hawaii while pregnant? There are many factors for us to consider but we don't want to put our life on hold while we're TTC. We'll definetely book a trip with travel insurance. If we happen to be pregnant by this summer, we'll also follow doctor's orders and not travel if I'm not able to.
We've done Mexico and Costa Rica. I'd go back to Costa Rica in a heartbeat, but I'm kind of over Mexico. Some places on my wish list are Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands. Just wondering if anyone had any advice about leaving the country while pregnant.

As a general rule of thumb, the second trimester is regarded as the best time to travel. Most women are past the morning sickness, and you have way more energy than in either the first or third trimesters. That said, DH and I went on an Alaskan cruise during my first trimester with DS. I did deal with some morning sickness/ sea sickness, but it was manageable and I still had a fabulous time. When I was pregnant with DD, DH and I took a baby moon to Prague and it was WONDERFUL. I was about 29 weeks pregnant at that point, if I remember correctly. We did lots of walking and I never felt like I couldn't handle it and we had a really nice time.
The main thing is to rest when you feel you need to, don't try to push yourself too hard, and on planes be sure and get up at least once an hour to walk around the cabin a bit to keep good circulation in your legs. Other than that, pick your destination and go have a great time
The only time that you would be restricted from travel during a normal pregnancy would be after 36 weeks. (If you are high risk for any reason, you would have more restrictions.)
However, I remember I wanted to join DH on a trip to Mexico (for an Ironman race) when I was 35 weeks but was advised not to go by my doctor; he suggested (and I knew) I wouldn't want to be out of the country if I were to go into early labor.
If you're looking to travel in June, though, that wouldn't be an issue for you. The biggest concern for you would be morning sickness, and you really won't know how you'll feel until you're actually pregnant. If you were to get pregnant in the next month or two, you'd likely be in the clear by June.
As with many times in pregnancy, you will just need to listen to your body, rest when you need to do so, and make sure to keep yourself fueled and hydrated.
We went on a cruise when I was 13 weeks pg. At the time, I thought I felt good compared to a few weeks prior when m/s was at an all time high. However, I wished we would have wait until I was 17-18 weeks pg because that is when I started to feel like my normal self again. I would wait until closer to the trip to book anything just to make sure though. I wouldn't want to be in first tri on a trip, that's for sure. I'd also get good trip insurance and make sure it covers pregnancy. I found that many do not.
We went to Hawaii in early July when I was 28 weeks pregnant and it was great! Plus we got better seats on the plan due to the pregnancy.

I've made 3 international trips while PG. First was to Hong Kong when I was 10 weeks PG with #1 and the other two were both to St. Martin when I was 20 weeks PG (once with #1 and another time when I was PG with #2).
I took the same approach on all three trips -- only drank bottled water, watched what I ate and generally took it easy. The Caribbean was a very easy trip compared to HK due to the length of the flight, the time-zone differences & not feeling the need to be really active all the time. Also I felt more comfortable in my food choices in St. Martin, but that might have been because I had been there a few times before being PG so I knew what places were good. In HK I felt I was taking a few chances in some of the restaurants.
IMO, being PG shouldn't hold you back from travelling if your PG is low-risk. Good luck and have fun!
I just went to Mexico @ 12 weeks pregnant and I'd do it again. The only thing to consider really is morning sickness & access to medical care if you need it, but its unlikely you will.
I got a prescription for Diclectin (I don't think they have it in the US though) for morning sickness and that helped quite a bit.
personally-- I stopped foreign travel after 24 weeks, but traveled domestically until 38 weeks.
I would go to hawaii in a heartbeat as the medical care is great and no food issues.
I'm sorry to hear that kappa
Thank you. I appreciate it. I know it was just a fluke (miscarriages are common after all), but it was still a huge bummer. Hoping 2012 will be our year though.
