XP from Travel: Must do in Philly

DH & I are thinking about taking a weekend trip to Philly sometime in the Spring.  We only live about 2.5 hours away but have never been before.  We love history and good food.  We'll definitely want to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.  Is the Reading Terminal Market a good place to go?  And please rec. your favorite places for good food and good beer!  We will most likely stay downtown so we can do most of our sightseeing on foot.   TIA!

Re: XP from Travel: Must do in Philly

  • You might want to check back next week when the some of the regulars are back and know the good places for food and drink.

RTM is a fun place to check out for lunch.  Many food options there.

  • RTM during the day is fun. gets crowded.

historic stuff is in Old City and there are plenty of foodstuffs there.

    its a very walkable city.

any of the Starr or Garces or Vetri restaurants are great. possibly not with a child though.

some suggestions really depend on where you are staying.

  • When we used to visit Philly we would stay at the Warwick. Amazing location and nice hotel.

Reading Terminal Market is fun, the Mutter Museum seems to be a hit with our guests as do the Rodin Museum and Art Museum (if you're in to museums). Maybe not so great with kids?

If the weather is good you can easily find yourself strolling the city for hours - it's so walkable and the neighborhoods around Rittenhouse and Society Hill are lovely to just wander around.

The Liberty Bell, Mint, Constitution Center and lots of other historic stuff is in the Independance Mall area, very close to Old City.

What kind of things do you enjoy doing? Maybe you could do the hop on hop off bus and then explore from there?

  • Favorite beer places in the Old City area: Eulogy, Beneluxx , Mac's Tavern (which pleasantly surprised me), and Race Street Cafe

Just north of Old City (a short cab ride), on N. 2nd and N. 3rd Streets, you will find a nice selection of bars and restaurants: N. 3rd, the Abbaye, Standard Tap, as well as the Piazza, which has shops, restaurants and bars.

  • erbur - i read that Naessen's is moving his liquor license from Beneluxx to his new "german asian"  place on market street.  weird. but then again, i used to know this guy and he is weird indeed.

to the OP - post again in the spring before you come.  new restaus, places change, new events to hit up.
