What time of the year is it best to visit NYC?
Hey ladies, my husband and I are hoping to check off a few things on our bucket list by visiting NYC next year. I was wondering if you can tell me what time of year is best to come up for 4-5 days? Thanks!!!
Re: What time of the year is it best to visit NYC?
I agree that it all depends... does your bucket list include items like "see the Rockefeller tree light up" or "watch the 4th of July fireworks"...?
Personally, if I were to pick based on seasons I would pick the summer, June or July. I appreciate a carefree walk in a pair of shorts a lot more than dragging snow/rain boots around.
another vote for "it depends on what you want to do!"
I love the fall weather the best. But then again, there is nothing better than Christmas in New York. :-)
I am in that "Depends what you want to do" camp, too.
I love Spring in New York. Always worth a trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for their Spring Cherry Blossom Festival.
Now that we have thoroughly confused the OP....
Come back when you have decided and we'll tell you what we like to best in your chosen season!
As a native NYer, I can tell you that unless you have specific seasonal things to see (fireworks in July or Christmas in NY) stick to spring or fall. You will obviously want to do the "tourist" things like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State building and you DON'T want to be riding the ferry to Liberty Island when it's 20 degrees out. You also don't want to be walking around the city when it's 90 degrees either. If you're going to be doing a lot of outdoor type things, then April, May, June is always a nice time to come.
You should know that there is no "off season" in NY so, there's no cheap hotel or airfare times.
With that said, regardless of when you come here are some things to do: Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island; Empire State Building; Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center has an observation deck and I think it has a better view that the ESB because it's not as high up so you see more details). Also, go to each of these places websites and pre-order your tickets, it will cost a few dollars more but I can tell you, you will be so glad you did, when you get to breeze past the line of schmoes who have to wait two hours for tickets.
Unless you are into astronomy and space I say skip the Planetarium, I found it boring. And avoid the chain restaurants and tourist traps of Times Square. You can eat really well on the cheap if you get out of the tourist areas (think east side in the 20s and 30s).
There's the Central Park Zoo. Of course and "Museum Mile" along 5th Avenue. If you come in the spring, you can also take advantage of all the great outdoor cafes and restaurants. Whatever you decide, you will have a great time.
Yeah, I was super impressed with Squishy's answer. Same with me, a native NYer that has that blank look.
Can we add Squishy's responses to the sticky? Mrs.K, can you do that if Squishy is okay with that?
I don't think I can do it since they've locked the post, but I can email the Nest gods and ask them to do it!
Squishy, are you ok with that?
