Does AF still guarantee an MOS?
My SO had his MOS guaranteed many years ago, but he has been out of the military for 6 years. He was an AF linguist.
My brother wants to enlist in the AF and then go to OCS down the road (he already has a bachelors). He is hoping for a specific MOS, but he was told by the recruiter that the AF no longer guarantees a career field.
Can anyone verify this?
Re: Does AF still guarantee an MOS?
This is what I would suggest.
My DH is Army but my friends DH just enlisted in the AF. He was told that he would get his MOS during basic. He got to pick a category and there are a bunch of jobs in there and they said he would get one of those.
His category is electronic, so there are a bunch of computer jobs and stuff on there. Hope that helps!
ETA: Per one of the recruiters in my region:
Oookay, the short answer is yes, your brother understood correctly.
Longer explanation in the best laymans' terms I can come up with: Because the economy is so craptastic, beggars can't be choosers. People are only allowed to be in the DEP (Delayed Enlistment Program) for 12 months before the must ship to BMT. The pickier people are about what AFSCs they want, the harder it is going to be for them to ship to BMT because again, with the economy, people are not getting out of the military, so those slots aren't opening up.
The recruiter explained it like fantasy football. HQ calls and says they (the AF) has two openings for a particular medical AFSC. That info drops to the three recruiting regions, and then alllll those recruiters have to check the recruits' AFSC wish lists to see who has those jobs listed. By the time Region C comes back with a name, Regions A or B have likely already submitted their own recruits' names. It's all extremely fast paced and people who want a particular job may get kicked out of the DEP before a slot ever opens for them.
So basically, a person can request a particular AFSC (this region allows five preferences) but they may never get to ship out, which does nothing for recruiting numbers and nothing for the recruit. He said the people who want particular jobs are better off going to college or trade school and doing it in the civilian world, because we can't accomodate them. Blame it on the economy.
Another ETA: He said the recruits who are willing to sign up for 6 years are looked upon more favorably upon than those willing to sign up for 4 years and it really is coming down to how badly people want to serve their country. They need to be willing to take an "Open" career course and do it for six, basically.
Thank you everyone! Ojo - I passed that info on to my brother so he can make a decision. I think he may consider Army since they've offered to guarantee his MOS, but he really had his heart set on AF. He has a decision to make now
He's already been to 3 recruiters...all give him the run around. I tell him to treat them like he would a used car salesman and not to believe everything he hears. I know enough military people (from my profession) that he should always double check.
Same thing with student loan repayment or bonus'....the runaround.
But thanks all!
