I've got terrible TMJ, and I popped my jaw especially weird today and now I can barely open my mouth. I'm so tired of this.
I can't sleep with the night mouthguard thing in; has anyone had success with anything else? My dentist told me I need braces, but then I went to an orthodontist and he said that braces don't fix TMJ. Not sure what the next step should be.

Re: Anyone have severe TMJ?
I have it but it isn't particularly bad in my case. I do the basics like take Ibuprofen if it starts acting up, ice as needed, and avoid chewing hard (no gum, etc). Nobody has ever mentioned braces to me as a treatment so I don't know about that. I had a mouth guard but I can't sleep with it either so I never use it. I'm not even sure where it is.
I do remember once as a teenager I had to go to a special dentist who did some sort of cleaning out of my TMJ - the joint itself. It sucked. I think he just shoved a giant needle in there and squirted saline around or something. It was because it hurt so badly to open my jaw I could barely do it. It helped a lot but it isn't something they do frequently. I don't know if they do it at all anymore. That way years ago. They talked about an implant thing but I'm pretty sure those have been pulled from the market or something.
I've had severe TMJ all my life, and it is a major pain in the rear.
What has worked for me - 2 major surgeries to rebuild the joint with physical therapy twice a week to reinforce the way I need to hold my jaw, and have medicine worked into the joint via impulses to prevent inflammation.
I wore splints 24 / 7 for 6 years until my entire head was retrained to rest in an open position. It was a pain, but worth it, long term.
I use Mark Berman as my doctor and love him.
Expect a battle as insurance companies love to exclude coverage or argue it is dental.
If you have specific quesitons, I'd be happy to ask them.
I have had it as long as I can remember. I even wore braces for 2 years to try and fix it and it didn't make a difference. When I was 16 or 17, I started getting it adjusted by a chiropractor using a process where they took my jaw through it's range of motion to break up any scar tissue and also did a massage technique inside my mouth on some very tender areas. Then the adjust at the joint with an activator.
It is much better than it ever was and the previous chiropractor that I saw also taught me the massage so I can do it myself if it seems to be aggravated.
I recommend not doing braces, because my teeth were straight to begin with it seemed to make a couple of them worse because they would tighten the braces for the TMJ and it made a few of my teeth slightly crooked and didn't help 1 little bit.
They used to do braces to "fix" TMJ but that is not the way they do things now. I've seen one of the leading oral surgeons in the country in treating TMJ (he is in Fort Worth) they do a series for lack of a better word of retainer type mouth guards.
The problem with this guy is that he didn't take insurance and it was very expensive.
I had braces to "fix" my TMJ back in 1987, the braces did nothing but now my bite has been completely altered and I still have TMJ.
You need to see an oral surgeon that specializes in TMJ. Do NOT let them do surgery as this is also a treatment that is no longer used.
