More Lake Tahoe Questions...

We are thinking of taking trip in March and staying in the resort in Squaw Creek (North Tahoe). For those of you that have gone to this area, do you recommend that we get a rental car?  Also, what are the must-sees/do/eat while there besides skiing and snowboarding?  TIA!

Re: More Lake Tahoe Questions...

  • I would definitely get a rental car.  The airport is in Reno, a lot of stuff is in South Lake Tahoe.  I would want the flexibility of being able to get around easily.  I would probably go for a 4x4, too, as sometimes you are required to drive a 4x4 with chains to pass on the roads.

Most of the places we went were in South Lake Tahoe, so I don't have any specific recs for restaurants or anything, sorry.  Truckee probably has some good places, though...

  • I used to live in Truckee and my husband worked at Squaw!  You really need a rental car, yes!!

Squaw is great for skiing and boarding, and they also have a spa you can relax with one day.  Up top (you can take the cable car) you can go to the Olympic Museum and then go ice skating and have some cocktails.

You can also go cross country skiing or snowshoeing in the area as well.

Tahoe City (5 miles from Squaw) has cute shops and restaurants and is right on the lake.  Beautiful.

Truckee (10 miles from Squaw in the other direction) has another little downtown area with shops and restaurants.

you can also head over to Nevada (20 minutes) and play in the casinos if that is your thing.  You can drive down to South Lake for a day (about an hour from Squaw) for more shopping and casinos (nice casinos).

March is a great time to go to Squaw!  Have fun, and yes, to reiterate, you definitely need a car!

  • ditto to PP you will for sure need a rental car w/ 4WD in March--we are supposed to get late-ish snow this year (crossing fingers)...

We stayed at the Resort at Squaw Creek in October.  It was absolutely wonderful.  I would highly recommend a spa day.  We only ate at one on-site restaurant--can't remember what it was called, but we did lunch there (by the pool).  It was good and reasonably priced given that it is at a resort.  Their vegetarian burger and sweet potato fries were DELICIOUS.

I agree w/pp re: going to Tahoe City, etc...we like to eat on the patio at Jason's (casual) for lunch and look at the lake...I've heard good things about Gar Woods but have never been there...

Garwoods is one of our favorites!  Great signature drinks and a lot of fun :)

  • Thanks for the responses so far everyone.  North Tahoe seems really laid back compared to South Tahoe.  I think it will be better for us since we aren't into casinos at all, but will we have enough to do for 4 nights/5 days? Besides Tahoe City and Truckee, what other village-type areas can we visit? Is I'm thinking we can ski/snowboard one day each in Northstar and Squaw Valley, visit Heavenly (gondola one day), and...what else?  Will it be a total pita to drive from Squaw Valley to Heavenly one day?

IMO, no.  It's probably about an hour drive, and I really liked the drive from Heavenly up to Squaw.  It was a really pretty drive up and around the lake, and you get way different views of the lake from Heavenly.  The only way it may be a bit of a PITA is if there's a lot of snow over the pass.  When we were there last Jan, there wasn't much snow, so it was a pretty easy drive.

  • Sunshine is right, it is a lovely drive and you can see the lake most of the way.  Beautiful.  If it snows though, you might want to wait until another day to go down south to Heavenly.

I used to live at Northstar and there is a cute village area there too.  You can ski/ride all day or go ice skating in the village.  There are shops (none that are super great) and restaurants (the Sushi restaurant is award winning, pricey but SO good), or you can take the gondola up and eat at the new resort they just put in (I am having a hard time remembering what it is, but it is delicious).

With 4/5 Days in North Lake you will not be bored.

    Have fun!
