Question: How I Met Your Mother

H and I have been watching reruns of HIMYM for two years and finally caught up, except that we haven't seen last night's episode. I have a question that's a spoiler if you haven't watched season 7...

Why did Robin think she was pregnant? Unless I missed something, it was like "OMG Barney I'm pregnant! What, doc? I'm not pregnant? Thank god! What? I can't ever get pregnant? Crying"

What did I miss? Did she have a false BFP?

Re: Question: How I Met Your Mother

  • That drove me up the wall.  Apparently her period was late (and she takes GREAT pride in having regular periods).  But homegirl apparently was too damn lazy to pee on a stick, she preferred to just tell her best friend/one night stand that he MAY be a daddy so that he could sweat it out with her waiting for her doctor's appointment?

Honestly, I think it was the writers being lazy and getting her to the doctor so that the infertility could be revealed all in one episode.

  • If I am correct, she hadn't taken a test when she told Barney - she was just late, and said her period is never late.

  • Thanks. I thought I had missed an episode or something!

  • This always annoys me about TV/movies -- whenever they want a woman to have a pregnancy scare, she makes a huge deal about how she's NEVER late, her period's like clockwork, etc.  Just seems silly to me.  I don't think any woman's period is really all that predictable.

But it was especially stupid on this season's HIMYM.  The girl could friggin' go to a drugstore and buy a pregnancy test?  She's supposed to be a smart girl, she knows to do that.  Also, if you do go to the doctor to get a pregnancy test, they don't just randomly test you for infertility.  And even if they did, one round of tests is not enough to tell someone you will NEVER EVER be able to get pregnant.  Grrr.

  • While we're on annoyances with the storyline, didn't Lily get pregnant during Hurricane Irene? That hit NYC on 8/28. And didn't they find out the sex in October? Everyone knows you can't find out the sex in eight weeks! I kept complaining to H that the dates didn't line up, and he got annoyed that I was paying that much attention to the details of a fictional show.

Yes, that annoyed us too.  There was a whole thread that turned into "Why can't HIMYM writers pay even lip-service to the basics of fertility, dammit!?!" that included the timing of finding out the sex, the idiocy of Robin not taking a simple peestick test, and the stupidity of her finding out she was infertile based on a supposed early pregnancy doctor's visit.  It included some digs at the female cast members who have had babies and therefore should have called shenanigans on those plot points as well.  ;-)  I'd dig it up and link to it, but I'm lazy. But I agree, as someone who went through even just the first rounds of IF testing, it's a bit of a slap in the face to see them say, "Oh, a simple blood test says you're infertile!"  It kind of minimizes how wrenching and invasive the whole process is.

Eh - the only time in my life I've ever been a day off with my period was when I was pregnant.
