Melanie Benjamin says that in the writings she fund about Vinnie and those she wrote herself there is very little discussion of her marriage to Charles. Why do you think Benjamin chose to portray her marriage as completely nonsexual? Do you think that could possibly be true?

Re: TT: Vinnie as virgin
I found it believable in light of the robotlike vinnie Benjamin had created. In a time when birth control wasn't exactly reliable, I guess I can understand being so afraid of a pregnancy that would kill me that abstaining from something I didn't understand or know wouldn't seem that hard.
I wouldn't think there would be a lot of writing about the sex life of a society woman in the late 1800s, so for me it's a big leap from "she found no information on it" to writing it as a sexless marriage.
That said, I don't think it's completely unbelievable given the way her character was written. Her marriage was essentially arranged, she was in love with Barnum, and she had little respect for Charles. That combined with her fear of childbirth and her general prudeness and it's not surprising, really.
I think the more unbelievable aspect is that she managed to survive however many years on the showboat without getting raped. The near-miss on the way to New Orleans seemed too convenient.

I wondered about that, but I just assumed she never really went anywhere where she would be alone with someone until Wood started pimping her out for those visits.
