Taking E to an asthma specialist today UPDATED at bottom
Any bets on how helpful this will be? Will we be sent on our way chasing our tail? Another steriod? An antibiotic?
So, T&P we find out what exactly is wrong with my kid. Thanks. Can you see I'm feeling cynical about all these f'ing doctors?

Charmin.
I know how frustrating it is when you hear the same things over and over (things that don't work). Good luck!
I hope you get some answers.
I don't know if this has been suggested already, but have you taken him to a clinic at a teaching hospital? I've found that those clinics are sometimes a little more vigilant about getting to the bottom of things, especially if there are eager med students who want to show off by solving problems.
Good luck! I hope they figure out how to make him feel better soon.

Thanks
Kay- good idea
November- yup. That's where I am. In roid rage hell with a toddler. Good times. He's running around their office in circles as I type. Thank god b is with me.
Things are seriously effed up when you get better care from a student than from a practicing professional...

I second Kay's idea. I work in an academic setting, and I think that academic centers are more knowledgeable about current treatment and recommendations.
Just to clarify, a med student doesn't see anyone in isolation. By law, they're supervised by a board-certified physician, and they don't make the final or important treatment decisions. They're just really eager.
Community physicians get lazy with time, in my opinion. And I'm going to private practice in six months. You have to be well-read and published in academia to get promoted. You don't in private practice.
OK! We got some answers. E stayed still enough for the CAT. His sinuses are majorly infected. Where they are supposed to come up black on the CAT, they were grey which means they are totally infected or something like that.
This doc is the guy to see in the area- apparently everyone goes to see him. I didn't see him first because my ped suggested this other doc in his office because I guess he didn't think I needed to see the head guy. Not that I asked- I just went with her. Anyway, this was a world of difference in procedure. They had him do a breath test on the computer, then the doc went through the history and immediately ordered the CAT and xrays. The called to the radiology place and they said they couldn't take us till tomorrow. The doc got on the phone personally and asked if they could do him a favor. Turns out, the radiology guy happened to also be someone B went to high school with. They said come right over, took us right away, and sent us back to the doc with the cd's of the films. Doc took a look and put him on 5 more days of steroid and 3 weeks of augmentin (antibiotic) to clear up the infection. We go back in a month to see how he's doing. But, the doc is pretty sure it is NOT asthma, doesn't need the inhalers, and that it's a sinus issue. If it is, then we go further to decide what can be done.
BUT, I'm so happy he doesn't have asthma, so happy I don't have to become clean to ribth's mom's standards to keep him from coughing, no more inhalers, and the steroid comes chewable so I don't have to mess with liquids E is trying to spit out. Only sucky thing is the steroid for another 5 days which f's with his behavior but I'll take it over asthma. Then B comes out with that he needed his tonsils and adenoids out and the doc says these problems tend to run in the family.
So, we got somewhere. Which is nice considering my MIL called B the other night and told him that she and FIL "didn't sleep ALL night" over this cough and they just want to "scoop him up and take him to a real specialist in NYC". Because all old Jews think the only docs worth dealing with, the only ones with answers are Jewish doctors in NYC. Meanwhile, my mother went to NYC to Columbia Presbyterian and they killed her there.
If he is having chronic infections that will not go away, you may want to pursue sinus surgery or have him tested for an immune deficiency. My chronic battle (10 years) with sinusitis is compounded by bad sinus anatomy (having surgery this year!), allergies and IgA deficiency. Once I have an infection, it takes WEEKS of antibiotics to get rid of it. My DD is having similar issues and has already had her adenoids removed. Right now she's on a nebulizer and daily allergy meds. It's a trip getting it all sorted out, between the two of us, but at least we're getting somewhere.
Hope he feels better soon!
Yes, I get what you're saying. This is just step one and the antibiotics are for THREE f'ing weeks this time. Longest ever and he's only been on antibiotics twice ever. But the doc wants to see if this antibiotic/steroid combo clears it up first and then go from there. His adenoid was checked and it seemed ok right now. E had been given inhalers from the get-go by the pulmonologist but I've been told that's pretty much what pulmonologists do- love to give meds. He never had the nebulizer till the first time at the peds office last thurs. He HATED it. The inhaler with the spacer is SO much faster and easier. If I had to do the nebulizer all the time, I'd be screwed. He was pulling at it and trying to shake it off. So annoying.
I'm glad you are starting to get answers, hopefully it will clear up quickly.
sorry the old Jews killed your mom.

I'm so happy for you! Sounds like E is being treated appropriately. I hope he gets better.
Also, my mom is just plain crazy. I don't clean that much, and I only have to use my inhaler like 1-2 times a month.
HAHA. Old Jews didn't kill my mother actually, I think it was an Italian guy to be honest. But it's just a very old school mentality old jews have- my father, if we were speaking would've yelled, "What are you an a$$hole- you take him to a specialist in the city", and he wouldn't have to say "Jewish specialist" because, who else would you go to??? in their mind. And my in-laws think we're just not taking care of him correctly because we're not seeking out the HJIC (head Jew in charge) somewhere in the city. But, we did, however, seek out the best in our county, in NJ and he happens to be Jewish so maybe they'll put a sock in it when they are told that.
Moo- No. Not Hackensack. But, I would have gone to one associated with there but Saddle River was more convenient. And like I said, anyone I mentioned this whole fiasco to was like, "Oh, you should go to Silverstein in Saddle River. Everyone goes to him, he's the best". And I have to say, i was really thrilled with his approach. He actually gave a shiit. I've never seen a doctor willing to go to bat for us on a moment's notice like that in my life. He actually high-fived B. It was pretty funny. Both B and I, and even E have seen some real douchebag doctors in our time.
