I NEED a Change

Hello All!

I have been working for the same Corp. for the past 4 years and i am really looking for a change...they have other positions available which i have applied for but i feel like with the current state of the economy everyone is applying for jobs. It has been a really hard road for me and my Hubby. The position that i am in right now i have to commute to it takes me about an hour and a half to get to work a day, i unfortunately know that i am being underpaid (when i go on other interviews they laugh when i tell them how much i make) and i am just a doormat and thats really upsetting to me. I know that i made myself that way i am a huge push over when it comes to my work but i am a very hard worker and always give it my all. I am having a hard time finding jobs lately and would like to know if there are some websites that i can check out that maybe i have overlooked? i live in Brooklyn NY and i would not mind commuting into thte city but i have not been able to really find anything....any advice?

I have also been thinking about starting a business from my home mainly event planning but i wouldnt even know how to get started. HELP!!!

Re: I NEED a Change

  • You state that you are getting interviews but it seems that you are not getting the job... I would start with taking a look at how you interview. What do you wear? How do you present? Do you ask a lot of questions and research the positions you are applying to? Are you asking for too much money or do they think that you will not stay long (I had a few people tell me this because of my many years of experience but they did not know I was willing to take a 10k paycut).

What websites are you using for your job search?

  • when starting your own business, do your research. Look up other websites of party planners...do some reading about party planning. I know there are tons of books on the topic. The next huge thing is marketing yourself...what type of parties do you want to plan...are you staying in a certain age group...what edge can you use over other planners?? (ex. i do freelance work for the materials for a party planner so they are unique and personal to each party OR do you make any sweets/food thats appealing...etc)
  • Me not being offered "the job" i feel has been within the past 6 months (which really stinks!) I am in the fashion field so i know i have to look the part so when i go on an interview i am alwaysin trendy business attire. I am very friendly and positive i have never had an issue with presenting myself but i almost feel like that might be a problem. Like a very recent job interview i had i was dressed nicer than the woman who was interviewing me. i Do ask open ended questions to the interviewer to get a good conversation going, i do prior research on the companies if i am not sure about their beginings etc. With the most recent job i interviewed for we didnt even talk about my pay...i feel like i might be selling myself short. After interviewing with the last company i left the interview feeling like i knew more about the business than the woman who was interviewing me. I automatically started to second guess myself in what i was saying and if i was pushy or cocky. I got upset that i was "promoting" myself as much as i was. I said all the right things but i almost felt like i was a threat to the woman interviewing me (who would have been my boss). when the interview was done i went to shake her hand and she ignored it and walked away....i was so annoyed...i knew i didnt get the job...she told me she would call me in 3 days 2 weeks went by and she called my cell and left this message about how she found someone who was more qualified....now not to toot my own horn here but i knew i was OVER qualified for the position and for her to say that made me feel like she was taking a dig at me. I could not deal with listening to the rest of her message (which p.s she was talking to me like a sick puppy) i deleted it.

sorry that was a lot more than i thoguht it would be lol i just got really annoyed thinking about this interview! i fee like i just missed strike three and i feel like i am out of options....

i look at any website! i am part of linkedin i look at the newspaper, monster, career builder i even resorted to craigslist.....I AM DESPERATE! lol
