I was going to just selfishly pose my dilemmas and ask for help, but I thought others might like to get advice on theirs as well. So, hopefully someone can help me with mine, and post theirs for others to weigh in on.
Here are my issues I'd like to know how others deal with:
1) Evening pool exercises when it's cold (I'm starting H2O aerobics-- ack...brrr!!): what do you wear leaving the pool to go home-- wet suit under something warm, just something warm, a full outfit, etc? Do you wash and dry your hair at the pool?
2) Pre-work exercise: (We have a gym with showers at work) Any tips for getting hair/makeup/outfit right when you don't have the luxury of your own bathroom/closet to work in? Do you have a set of makeup that you leave in a bag? Do you try on your work outfit the night before to make sure everything fits that day?
Thanks ladies! I have to get serious about dropping some lbs, so I'd appreciate any help getting past these hurdles.
Re: Things that get in the way of working out (or make it hard to workout)
Ditto Lady walton. I usually change out of wet clothes (either from swimming or sweating) and shower once I get home. If my hair is wet, I make sure I have hoodie or something so I catch too much of a chill with the wet hair.
2) I'm working on this soon as well. We are going to start going to the gym before work and I won't have time to go home and change. I'm thinking it will take a good amount of planning and packing the night before. I've already collected some travel size personal care items like hair spray and deoderant. And I currently keep most of my make-up and brushes in one bag so that should be easy. I'll let you know how it goes!
I'm a Masters swimmer, so I deal with this problem. I shower and wash my hair at the pool, but I don't dry it there. I definitely change out of my wet suit, I wear warm sweats to practice usually. When it's really cold, I have a big winter hat I'll put on that keeps me warm but doesn't mess up my wet hair or give me hat head. Sometimes I dry my hair when I get home from practice, usually I just let it air dry.
I can't help on the evening pool one but for the pre work stuff this is what I do.
I have boot camp in the mornings and sometimes go to work and shower get ready there.
I have a seperate bag with a towel and travel size soaps, shampoo's etc along with a pair of flip flops (I won't stand bareboot in the shower at work), and a seperate makeup bag w/ just essentials. I grab my clothing the night before and fold nicely into the bag. I don't bother trying it on since I assume it should still fit appropiately.
When I did water aerobics at night I would change into a sweat suit type outfit, usualy forgoing the unders. I was going straight home. I would take a shower at home.
Working out in the morning, I have an extra set of shampoo, make up, etc. If you use a blow dryer, I find it easier to take my own rather than relying on the one at the gym. I got a small bag at the Target Dollar Spot (think mini-reuseable grocery bag) and I keep all my shower stuff in there (inside a big ziplock). When I am ready to take my shower, I just pull out that bag and I am ready to go to the showers.
I usually carry extra sets of unders in my gym bag (in a ziplock) in case I some how forget to bring new ones. Two months ago, I brought the wrong pants with me (they had a rip in them and were meant to go to the cleaners). Since then, I always keep a spare outfit in the car.
I pack my lunch and car the night before, so it is not as time consuming to get out of the house in the morning. I put my dress clothes on a hanger and hang that on the door so I don't forget. Shoes and other accessories are packed in my gym bag.
As a side note, I put the date I open my make up/shampoo, etc on it in a black sharpee. After six months, I toss them. I have extremely sensitive skin now so I don't want to take any chances.
I did a water aerobics class last winter. I wore my bathing suit under sweats and heavy coat and brought change of underwear/bra. I would do a quick shower at the pool afterwards (my hair didn't get wet) and changed into dry clothes. I was always freezing afterwards so I didn't want to be wet in the car.
I've done lunchtime workouts here at work and I never got terribly sweaty so I never washed my hair. Just brought soap, deodorant, workout clothes and changed back into my work clothes after work. I had some makeup staples - powder, blush, mascara - to do touch-ups after the workout. I kept my towel at work and just brought it home on the weekends to wash. If you can go to your office first before your workout, I would keep as much stuff in your office as possible so you don't have to worry about remembering everything. Or bring as much stuff as you need for the week on Monday.
What confounds me is those who can do a lunchtime workout. Clearly I'm more high main. than them as I can't imagine getting totally ready to go AND working out it that time.
For the pool, I'd just strip the suit off and throw on a coat (fleece type thingy) and sweatpants. I certainly wouldn't screw with bra/undies. And ditto pp about just throwing the wet hair in a hat. I wouldn't even bother showering at the pool/gym but I live very close to the gym and have super short hair so don't worry about damage.
The AM stuff doesn't work for me for the issues you mentioned. I just prefer getting ready at home and will actually drive back to the house vs. get ready at the gym. If you're really gonna do the AM workout thing I think it's totally work it to buy duplicates of your 'go-to' hair/beauty supplies (similar to what I do for travel). And save you 'always works' looks for the days when you work out in the morning. Thus there shouldn't be as much muss/fuss pulling outfits together and hoping they work.
Oh - and for the AM workout - keep a bag in your trunk with a spare nude thong/bra/nylons (if you wear them) and maybe a very basic, black work shoe so that if crisis strikes and you forget something, you're sorta covered.
