biggest loser weight loss
So this weekend I was reading about how the biggest losers do it. Obviously, besides the fact that they work out almost all day.. they eat a small amount of calories and rarely eat any of their exercise calories back.
I read somewhere, I think on webmd, that it is ok to lose up to 20lbs a WEEK! If you're doing it safely. The most I've lost in a week is about 8lbs (i am also bigger than all of you i think). I just wonder what I'd have to do to lose 20. I would just DIE!
I just wanted to share that.. I still can't get over it. 20lbs in one week. dang.

I'm a big BL fan and I know 20 pounds in a week has happened, especially with the larger contestants. It's possible, but the low # of calories you'd be consuming to lose that much would not be very sustainable, and as I understand it, could cause damage to your metabolism.
I've noticed the crazy high numbers typically happen right at the beginning of the show, and I think these are people who've gone from literally no exercise to moving 8-12 hours a day. Their bodies are probably shocked into dropping the weight.
You also have to consider that the contestants are basically exercising full time. They're away from home and don't deal with work/family/real life demands like we do, at least while they're at the ranch. I do really admire the past contestants who really stick with it and keep the weight off over time.
I'm excited for the new season to start tonight!

I've never watched the show but my friends/coworkers always rave about it. I feel guilty to watch it because I feel like I should be working out instead of watching my fellow big friends work out. lol.
I totally understand that of course, if you do nothing and weigh 500lbs, when you workout for 6-8 hours a day, you'll see some major movement, even if it is just water weight.
I just think it's crazy that a doctor says, 20lbs a week is fine.. I've NEVER heard anyone say that is ok. Reading that shocked me.
This would be my guess as well. I've always heard healthy, safe, sustainable weight loss described as 1-2 pounds/week.

That is what I have always heard too...
I am oftten guilty of not eating enough and it had KILLED my metabolism.
this is me most of the time.. well not when i'm logging but when i'm not... i usually don't eat until after 3pm.
2lbs is great. I find that because my body retains water so much, I'm able to shed more weight.. and having more weight to lose helps. 2lbs is pretty average for me, if i don't work out.
Nutritionists and doctors have told me 1% of your body weight is safe and sustainable weight loss, which for most people is 1-2 lbs/week. But when you weigh a lot more, 1% of your body weight tends to be significantly more too.
I'd agree with everyone else who said 1-2 pounds (which would likely be around 1% of all our weights) is healthy per week.
I kind of wonder if the BL contestants don't face the same challenges that super-endurance athletes do - I've heard that lots of people who do Ironman competitions and whatnot tend to put on a TON of weight the second they stop working out because they're going from one extreme to the other. I would think that would be likely for the BL contestants as well since they can't possibly maintain their full-time workout regimen indefinitely?
I understand the more you weigh the more you have to lose and those first few pounds come of quickley. To be losing 20#s per week at a 1% loss these contestants must be at least 2000+pounds. If a person were to weigh that much they would be either confined to the bed or nearly dead. So I maintain that it is unhealthy and the show should not be continue to encourage such drastic measures. As a PP said it does "kill your metabolism". Your body goes into a starvation mode so when you eat ANYTHING it will do its best to convert it to fat storage so it can be used. Our bodies are excellent at creating and storing fat for future use.
The first weight definitely comes off quickly. The other thing to remember is that a "week" on the biggest loser is not a true week. It's often more like 1-2. Plus, the biggest loser folks are treating this as their full time job.
However, I don't agree with the 1-2 pounds of weight loss is the only healthy weight loss. It's quite common for folks with a lot of weight to lose to lose 5-10 pounds the first (and actually the 3rd) week of low carb eating due to water retention. I don't even have much weight to lose now, and I've lost 4 pounds in 4 days. It will usually average out to about 2 pounds a week in the end though.
The most important thing is getting the weight off. Maintenance is the true difficult component, regardless of how the weight was actually lost.
