Sound bars/surround sound?

Does anyone know anything about sound bars?

DH has wanted surround sound for a really long time, and I just don't want wires all over the place and i'm too cheap for wireless (when I looked around the first time - 3ish years ago, wireless wasn't that great, plus it was $$$$)... anyways, I'm seeing these sound bars all over the place.  It's a long thin bar that produces sound thats allegedly as good as a surround sound system.

Does anyone have one they could recommend?  Or if you have wireless surround sound - that'd be great too!

Re: Sound bars/surround sound?

  • Are you thinking of buying a home soon?  DH installed ceiling speakers and that made our surround sound system a lot less cumbersome.  I don't know anything about the bars, but I can ask DH tonight.

Not for at least 3 years.

    Your setup sounds awesome though!

  • I just got DH one for Christmas.  It's way better than the TV sound, but not as good as surround sound.  We got one that was around $100, that has some sort of optical something or other, and doesn't have a subwoofer.  I think ours is a Vizio VSB200.

Are you able to control the soundbar with your tv remote?  I was reading the reviews on a couple different ones and it seems like some remotes work and some don't.

Also, do you know if having a subwoofer would improve the sound?  I don't even know wtf a subwoofer is so....

Yes, it works with our directTV remote.  I'm not sure if that was difficult to set up or not - DH did it.

The subwoofer is a separate big speaker.  It would improve the sound for things like explosions in action flicks.  Given the size of our tiny family room, that seemed like overkill to me.

In DH's book - this would be a plus. lol
