It appears I am now the proud (?) owner of a Kindle Fire, thanks to Dr Sissy and BIL, who know of my love for all things social media and figure on selling me on the e-reader portion somewhere down the road, I guess. (Keri loves her paper books, but whatever.)
Anyhoo - Todd insists I should keep it, I confess my first idea was to send it back. I have to admit, I have seen parents use tablets, smartphones, readers, etc, to entertain kiddos when a breakdown seems impossible to avoid, and I like the idea of that.
But I don't know. I have never had any interest in owning any kind of a tablet, and I don't really think of myself as an e-reader type of gal. (Then again, you never know.)
Any comments from Fire owners? I am torn.
I confess if I send it back, the credit will probably just sit in my amazon account and go to pay subscribe and save dipe orders for a bit.
Re: Kindle Fire owners?
I think you should try reading a book on it. I felt the same way about you and paper books, so when I got my ereader, I was dubious. However, I loved the experience of reading on an ereader. I didn't feel like I was missing anything.
Do you have an amazon prime account already? Netflix or Hulu+ accounts? That will make a little bit of a difference in my answer on whether or not to keep it for tablet type content.
I got a fire for Christmas and absolutely LOVE it. I'll bring mine to lunch sometime and school you on what makes it my favorite device ever... ;-)
Strong vote for keeping it here...

I don't have a Fire, so my opinion is strictly on the joy of tablets. My iPad is a permanent diaper bag fixture. There have been many occasions where Elmo ABCs or the PBSKids app have prevented a meltdown of epic proportions. I also give it to ash when I take a shower - I bring her & the iPad into the bathroom & she is perfectly content to hang out for 10 minutes.
I use the Kindle app on it, and use it a ton. I was originally in the paper book camp too, but I love having an e-reader. It's convenient, I have the app on multiple devices so I always have a book with me & there are tons of free or low-cost books. I vote keep it - it may become your favorite thing.
No more baby siggie pics. Boo.

Part of the reason I am thinking I will keep it is that I do have an Amazon Prime membership, so I would have access to that stuff...

I *FOR SURE* would not want an iPad. I think that is why they got me this, they know I would have sent that back.
I have seen what they can do to electronics too - books are cheaper.
But I think I am going to give this a shot. Why not? My laptop has a STUPID short battery life, so if nothing else I can use this for recipes and FB, and find some fun stuff to entertain Coop.
Plus as we start thinking about depersonalizing the condo to sell, it will probably mean clearing the bookshelves, and this can keep me in books without the clutter while I find a new home for all of them.

I have something like 200 books on my Kindle and this really excites me. I love having all these books at my fingertips. I have a regular Kindle and the apps on my Iphone and Ipad and I use them all.
Freebies 4 moms always has free books listed and I just discovered this site which lists more free books or sale books.

I buy or borrow the books that I really want to read and have plenty of free one's for filler. I like to read in the middle of the night sometimes when the littles wake me up and I find it's much easier to do with my Kindle.
You can use it as a recipe book in the kitchen. I had an Ipad and rest it in a recipe stand that has a plexi cover while I cook. It's really handy because most recipes I use are on web sites or blogs.
If you plan to fly with DS at all, it is a godsend to have something small that will entertain them from 2 years and up. We rely heavily on ours when we travel, which is 5-6 times a year.
As I told my MIL, my mom, and a friend. Owning a kindle/e-reader/tablet, doesn't make you less of a reader or less loyal to "real" books...it actually makes you appreciate them in yet another form.
Plus I just met a published author this weekend and we happened to talk about e-books and she is way into them. Thinks it's a great way to cut publishing costs, get out to more readers, and get more $$ in the hands of the authors themselves. It's only one person's perspective, but she said that she prefers that someone buy from a local independant book store, then she'd rather someone buy an e-book than buy from a big-box store/big conglomerate bookstore. I couldn't find out her reasoning, b/c my kid hit his head at that point and needed some attention.
Are you united with the CCOKCs?
BTW - this did not escape me, and you will get yours, lady.
