Whine/Vent, re: Metro/transit subsidy
So, I just realized this morning that starting this month, transit subsidies are capped at $125/month.
This really sucks balls.
I just did the calculation and now DH and I are going to have to pay a total of $300/month out of pocket for transportation costs. I might as well freaking drive to work.
How is it that Metro can suck $27 of shared expenses out of my pocket and the fed gov't coffers to park a car in their lot each day, and transport 2 people 11 miles each way to work? Ugh. That's like over $.60 per mile, per person.

Re: Whine/Vent, re: Metro/transit subsidy
Yes, this is true. There were 2 changes - the transit/parking purses (kicked in back in Oct/November'ish), and a lowering of the subsidy cap (which used to be $190, I think...)
My transit is $194/month ($4.85 each way), not including parking.
Parking is $4.75/day, plus a $65/month reserve fee.
For people that live closer in, their fares aren't a ridiculous $4.85 each way, so they're generally at or under the $125/month for transit.
Is this gov't wide? Or just your agency?
That is pretty steep, especially if you have no choice but to park (which I know wasn't reimbursed before anyway, but it is an added expense).
I'm really hoping if I got a job on the metro that SO could drop me off everyday, otherwise it might not be worth it.
I paid all out of pocket for 5 years.
Only benefit was pre-tax. $13.10/day! $275+/month just for me. Hubz paid even more on Metro (further trip), but his transit was comped, and he only paid parking OOP.
Do you commute late enough that you have to use the reserved parking? Just genuinely curious, not flaming.

The non-reserved parking is gone before 8AM in our garage... we don't drop DD off at daycare until 7:45-8:00. We have a complicated drop-off/pick-up routine, since we only have one car... and need to juggle both our schedules, plus daycare schedule, plus a long commute.
If DH ever gets a job closer to home, I'll be able to walk to and from metro, he can drive to work and won't have to park. That would be nice.
Gottcha. Makes sense.
At Vienna, which has two big-a$$ garages, I never understood why people paid to park in reserved parking at 6:45 a.m. when there were still plenty of available spots up one or two levels. I'm sure at 8:00 it'd be full like yours is though!
