where in queens did you live? i lived in astoria for the better part of seven years then forest hills for three. there are some major lifestyle upgrades for us here (no more laundromat, not hearing our upstairs neighbors' kids running all.the.time. and living more centrally) but i loved both neighborhoods. i would do almost anything for a pizza from nick's in fo hi right now!

Re: **veruca**

  • I grew up in Woodhaven.  My dad is from Astoria.  I love Forest Hills!   Don't even get me started on pizza haha!  Nothing here compares!

  • we do a lot of homemade pizza because you're right, nothing here compares. don't tell the manhattanites but most of my favorite pizza places were in queens. i also miss all the awesome, cheap greek food in astoria. even fo hi was lacking on that. and the beer garden at bohemian hall (though the hipsters have infested and made that less fun than it was 6-7 years ago)

  • It's been a really long time since I've gotten to scope out the restaurants in that area.  Maybe one of these days DH and I will take a trip to just go back to our old neighborhoods and see what's there.  These days we're up there just to visit family on LI and don't get much time to ourselves.

  • we didn't get to queens the last two times we were in town so we definitely want to at least go back for afternoon next time. we may even stay at a long island city hotel since it's cheaper and offers easier access to astoria and fo hi restaurants. us zum stammtisch considered part of woodhaven? i remember going there for my old roommates birthday with his dad & stepmom, having a lot of beer and schnitzel and then passing out on the couch when we got back. so good!

  • I've been to Zum Stammtisch!  Years ago though.  It's not considered Woodhaven, but it's close by.  This is making me want to pack a bag and head up there asap to head back to these places haha!

  • you should! i could totally go for any of my queens favorites right about now. if you end up in forest hills next time you're visiting family, i highly recommend pizza and/or calzones at nick's pizza.

  • Thanks for the pizza recommendation!  I will definitely keep it in mind!

  • it's wood fired, not traditional NY style pizza but it is sooooo good! i could drink their sauce from a glass. i was *thisclose* to begging for the recipe before we moved here!
