New Job Advice

I currently work for the government, and I dislike my job. While there is the opportunity to advance, I feel my job can be mindless at times. I completed my Master's degree in August and have been applying for jobs that I would enjoy/actually use my talents. I had an interview for a job that I really would like, working for a non-profit. It's a 40+ hour per week job that is salaried with the option to earn comp time. I really feel that I will be offered this position, but it would be a 10,000 pay cut with no retirement and limited vacation. My DH is currently taking classes for his Master's in Teaching. He will be required to student teach this fall if he doesn't get hired through emergency certification this summer. If he does student teach, we will have a very limited income from August-December. I have also applied for a higher education job in TN (we live in KY). This job is what I would describe as my "deam" job, but I am worried how it will pan out logistically. The position would be a $6,000 increase for my current salary with similar benefits and retirement. DH would have to stay in KY to either teach if he was offered a position or student teach for his degree. He would try to sell the house (which I am not sure we could get what we still owe), if sold he could move in with ILs, and I would rent a place in TN. Once DH is done with student teaching, he could try to find a job in TN, which may be difficult since it would be the middle of the year.

I just wanted to see if anyone had advice on what to do. I would love the non-profit job, but I dont think we can afford the pay cut. I plan to negotiate salary if offered the job, but I don't want to sell myself short or come off with an outrageous amount.  I was thinking start at $7,000 more but accept $5,000 (I may have no leeway in salary since it is a non-profit but I am going to try). On the other hand I would also love the job in TN but I don't want to strain our family financially with the move and trying to sell the house. TIA

Re: New Job Advice

  • You haven't been offered either position, so there's that.

Additionally, I would stay put until you know more about H's job situation. There are too many unknowns for me to be comfortable making a change, unless I was being harrassed at work or being treated for work-related anxiety.
