Maui - where to stay
I'm planning a May trip to Maui and would love hotel recs. Which part of the island is best weather wise as well as proximity to restaurants? Thanks so much!

Like PP said Wailea and surrounding area has the best (sunniest) weather on the island, so that is where we chose to stay.
As far as hotels go, Four Seasons Wailea can't be beat! Absolutely gorgeous property, no resort fee, no chair/umbrells fees, and a serenity pool to die for.
We stayed here on our honeymoon and loved it. The only reason we likely wouldn't stay there on a return trip is that we'll be bringing our kids, and the Grand Wailea next door seemed a bit more family-friendly (and more along the lines of what my kids would like in a resort). But for an adults only visit back to Maui I'd choose the 4S hands down!
We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea and loved it! It's a gorgeous resort, and has a beautiful beach. The rooms, which all are suites, are super nice and have a huge bathroom and wrap around balcony. I highly recommend!
Wailea is a very nice upscale area with the Shops at Wailea, which has upscale shops & boutiques and some good restaurants. Kihei is very close though (5 min away) which is like a beach town with a variety of restaurants, bars and shops.

I've stayed in Wailea, Kihei, and Lahaina. Next time I go I'll stay in the upcountry.
Both west and south maui have excellent restaurants, so that shouldn't be a problem. Both have access to beaches and hiking. Really, either would be fine. Find a hotel/price you like and go for it.
We recently stayed at Hotel Wailea which isn't one of the traditional resorts that people recommend, but we really enjoyed it. It's actually on the hill above the town, and it was awesome. Gorgeous views, really quiet and private, and they have a shuttle to drive you places. We got tanked at the 4S for our anniversary dinner and just called for a ride back
They have some sort of exchange with grand wailea, but I didn't look into the details.
Other comments, don't bother going to Mama's fish house. It was very disappointing; I'm not sure why there's s much hype. Even more disappointing was Sea House in Napili. I'd been looking forward to that for so long since I bought their cookbook 5 years ago. It was less than mediocre. It was like an olive garden version of Hawaiian food. The chef that wrote the book left like 4 years ago.
