Dumb question... how do I watch TV without cable service?

I feel really techno-challenged asking this, but we've always had Mediacom and I'm done paying them.  Their customer service is horrible and I'm sick of paying for it.

SO - how do we watch basic TV?  I know stuff changed a year or so ago where I needed some sort of converter?  But now when I call Mediacom it says something else is changing and I need another digital thingy?  I take it I can't just buy rabbit ears and hook it up?

TIA! :)

  • do you have an HD style of TV?  you should only need a convertyer if you have an older TV.
  • We have 1 plasma and 1 "older style" -- it's about 6/7 years old - just not HD or anything

  • If you have rabbit ears for your hd tv you should be able to pick up 5, 8, 11, 13, 17, and 23...that's what we get at least! You will need a converter for your older tv, but it will pick up on more channels actually!

You'll need a converter for the older TV. and you should be able to get the regular channels. and possible the 13.2 weather channel. Not for sure on that though.

  • How much are they/where do I get a converter?

  • You can get a converter for $50, but they don't last long...I'd spring for a more expensive one if you can. Walmart carries them. You will be able to pick up on all 'extra' channels...5.2, 8.2, 13.2, 13.3 (movies), 17.2 (rock music) and 17.3 (country music)

  • We got rid of Mediacom Dec 1. We have 2 tvs, one HD and one older. For both of them we just used a cable cord to plug them directly into the cable outlet in the wall (as opposed to before, when they connected to a box, then the box connected to the cable outlet in the wall).  We get 5, 8, 13, fox, tbs, E!, CMT, and some other channels on both TVs, plus HD of most of those channels on our HD TV.  We also got a Roku, which we are very happy with.
  • Thank you!!!
