I can't believe my trip to New Zealand is next month, and due to a family emergency that's been eating up most of my time, I haven't booked any specifics except for the flights to/from the USA. We will be traveling to Auckland, Taupo, Rotorua, Whitianga, Wanaka, and Queenstown. When I tried to nail down hotels, I noticed many do not have air conditioning, but a few do. The trip is Feb 20-March 4 and I do often have difficulty sleeping if the room is hot. Based on your experiences there, are most of these cities pretty cool at night? Did anyone who stayed in hotels w/ no A/C have any preoblem? I'm willing to pay extra for a hotel w/ A/C if it will give me a better night's sleep, but I don't want to obsess over it if it stays pretty cool at night in most places. I remember I ran into the same issue in Switzerland during my Sept trip there and ended up staying in places without A/C and it was fine. I was just curious what others think. Also if anyone has specific recs for hotels in any of those cities, I'd love to hear them. I budgeted about $100-$200/night for hotels.
Re: Hotels in New Zealand
I went during the same dates and honestly don't remember if anyone had a/c since it was so cool at night we sometimes needed heat.
I was mostly on the SI, though, where it's cooler. We only stayed 1 night in Auckland (well, we flew out at midnight, too, so that was another night I guess), so I don't remember our hotel's specifics, but we were wearing jeans. I figure any day I wear jeans, the night is cool enough to sleep without a/c. You should be fine.
DH and I visited New Zealand in February 2008 and we stayed at the Bella Vista hotel chains. They were simple, clean and affordable. The temperatures were fine in the hotel rooms where we weren't too hot or cold, and I honestly don't remember if there were a/c units or not. We stayed at the Bella Vista Te Anau and Bella Vista Wanaka. I think the prices were about $125 (US) per night, or less.
We stayed with family in Auckland, Rotorua and only took a day trip to Queenstown, so I don't have any hotel recs for those.
HTH!
