Coupon Questions

One thing I really want to do a better job at in 2012 is couponing/saving money wherever I can. I don't intend to become a full blown hoarder with a huge stockpile, but coupining is something I am pretty interested in learning more about. I know we have all talked about this a few times, so sorry for the duplicate.

Do any of you coupon?

What are your favorite resources for getting coupons?

Any coupon blogs that you read/follow for deals?

Any tips for a novice?

Re: Coupon Questions

  • Do any of you coupon?

I do, just to save money on the items I am already planning to buy.  I only cut coupons for brands that I buy on a regular basis.  I figure if I'm using a coupon just to try something new, I'm not really saving.  I've saved up to $15 using coupons alone and up to $60-70 with store card discounts included.  So I'm not a "grocery hoarder" like the people on TV but I save while I can!

What are your favorite resources for getting coupons?

Sunday paper mostly and I have a coupons.com account

Any coupon blogs that you read/follow for deals?

    No

    Any tips for a novice?

It's pretty basic, but combine store sales and coupons together :)  And my store doubles coupons under $1

ETA:  The thing that saves me the MOST money by far is menu planning.  I try my best to use up what I already have in the kitchen so I don't waste leftovers.  I still end up throwing food out, which I hate, but I feel much more organized when I have a menu plan and a shopping list based on that.

That is a really good point. I will have to sit down and see if I can get a good menu plan going as well. Thanks!

  • What are your favorite resources for getting coupons?  I use blogs and coupon sites like coupons.com, redplum.com, etc.

Any coupon blogs that you read/follow for deals?

Here are the ones that I follow:

    http://athriftymom.com/

    http://freebies4mom.com/

    http://hip2save.com/

    http://thethriftycouple.com/

    http://sweetpenniesfromheaven.com/

    http://www.wickedcooldeals.com/

    http://www.thefreebiejunkie.com/

    http://couponcravings.com/

Any tips for a novice?  I mostly look for the deals/freebies.  I don't actually get all extreme couponing.  But Ditto Allison about planning meals.  It helps a ton!

  • Do any of you coupon? I do some

What are your favorite resources for getting coupons? I get them from my MIL because she gets several papers. Another website that wasn't mentioned is http://thekrazycouponlady.com/ which a friend referred me to. If I wanted to be crazy I could look at the recycling containers at work . . .

Any coupon blogs that you read/follow for deals? Not right now but that's a good suggestion for me :-)

Any tips for a novice? Agree w/Allison, plan menus and buy what you need for the week. If you don't have a stockpile of meat in the freezer, look at what meats are on sale that week and try to start there with your recipe choices. I pick out my recipes, try to use the ingredients from one that you might have extra of (fresh herbs, a partial can of tomatoes, etc) and use it in another recipe that week. I stock up on dry or canned stuff when on sale (noodles, pasta, canned/ jarred tomato products) and other stuff which keeps, hopefully with coupons in tow. With meat I use a lot I buy extras and freeze it, so if there are no good deals for meat I want to use one week I just defrost out of the freezer.

If you aren't familiar with sale prices, I would highly suggest keeping a small notebook or a few piece of paper dedicated to noting the sale price of stuff you use at the major store you shop at, if not multiple stores which are within reasonable distance for you to shop at. I tracked the sale prices for a few months so I could tell what a true good sale price is. I did this with the weekly circulars and my grocery store lists the things I buy online when I log in with my store bonus card, and tells me if it's on sale currently). For example, boneless skinless chicken breast is normally $3.99/lb. It goes on sale often for $2.99/lb, which sounds great, $1.00 off per lb. However, I saw it get to as low at $1.79/lb, and it relatively frequently goes on sale for $1.99/lb. So my rule of thumb is to never pay more than $1.99/lb for B/S Chicken breast. If it's more expensive I don't buy it. That's not coupon info but just a general savings attitude that might help contribute to your overall $ savings :-) Good luck!

  • Do any of you coupon?

I have started, mostly Target and CVS (when you combine the coupons with Extra Care Bucks which you use on the following purchase you can get some really good deals at CVS on health and beauty items)

What are your favorite resources for getting coupons?

Mostly the paper, or sometimes online, Target.com has a coupon section that is nice if you are already headed there.

Any coupon blogs that you read/follow for deals?

    dealseekingmom.com

    krazycouponlady.com

    Any tips for a novice?

Start small I think would be good advice, I got overwhelmed in the beginning.  Also be willing to try other brands, for example DH always always used Gillette razors, but I have gotten really really good deals on Schick razors, so being wiling to use different brands will help.
