Bed Bugs!

Yikes!  Apparently we have bed bugs!  And they're gross!  And I'm afraid we won't be able to get rid of them and I don't want to sleep in my house.  And I do NOT have the time or money to be dealing w/ this right now!  Grrrrr....end vent.

In reading about them and how you get them, my best guess is they hopped a plane ride home w/ us from Mexico and have been quietly mulitplying.  Apparantly Mexico is a hot spot and they like to travel in luggage (and we store ours under our bed) and then crawl up and go to town.  Makes me not want to travel.

Anyone had to deal w/ this that has some advice?

  • yikes is right...

what can you do to get rid of this? i've heard it was a NIGHTMARE!

  • Yikes! That seriously sucks! I am sorry!

I think you need a new mattress....honestly, that's the only thing that would make me feel comfortable that they were gone....

Maybe for the time being until you can save up, you could pick up a mattress from st vincents or goodwill....

I think you need pest control too.

The only thing I keep thinking was is an episode of Hoarders I watched recently where the family started camping in their yard b/c their bedbugs got so terribly bad. I am sure yours aren't that bad....but that's the image I have in my head. haha.

ETA: you could prob check craigslist for a cheap mattress too. there are some on there that are new or very lightly used.

ETA again: just found this one on CL. Brand New $165  they take CC too, since you said you don't have the money, maybe you have a CC

  • you def need pest control.. a new mattress for sure. you need to wash everything.. but i wouldn't do anything until you contact pest control.

i just googled it and am now itching.. i'm soooo sorry! i googled how to check for bed bugs and i know how exactly to detect them. i also know what they look like and what rashes lookl ike. barf. i'm sorry.

  • I've been googling it all day.  We already got rid of our mattress (it was old anyway).  We have an extra in our spare room, but it'll get infested soon if we don't get rid of these suckers...I guess they can hide anywhere.  When I can get out of work I'm going to get some supplies and try to clean up/throw away as much as possible.  Gonna borrow my dad's steam cleaner.  We'll try it ourselves first, then hire someone if we need to.  I think it's going to be a long night!  Followed by a long few months...I might be cleaning everyday.

It's funny DH has been complaining about bites for a while and I thought he was crazy or being a baby...I haven't noticed anything.  I guess they like him better.  No rashes or anything like that for either of us.  I would never have known if DH wasn't being biten and went looking for them.

I think you'll need a new mattress and to fumigate your home. A pest control person would be able to tell you best. Probably best to toss the luggage too. damn. I'm sorry. Not a good way to start off the new year. Poor Jennuine!

If it makes you feel any better I got sent home for having lice like 3 times in elementary school and one time when I was having my hair cut the hair dresser found a flea in my hair. Yea. I was that girl. I slept with a pile of cats on me that were indoor/outdoor and my parent's clearly didn't give them flea treatments. I was basically a barnyard animal until I became self aware in middle school.

Yeah, I had lice too!  But, these are worse b/c they're way bigger and you can see them.  Ew!  Everything says not to bomb, it just spreads them.  Heat/steam kills them and alcohol and you have to wrap your bed so they can't get in apparantly...we'll find out.  Not looking forward to it!

  • DH doesn't want me telling anyone...I guess it's embarrassing.  But online peeps don't count, right?  I gotta tell someone!

  • Oh no! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.  We store our luggage in our closet and I really know we shouldn't. I think I'm a lot more paranoid about these things than my husband. I'm also super picky about where our luggage goes in hotel rooms and rarely feel very comfortable in the rooms in general.

I'm not sure there's any way to really get rid of the bed bugs unless you throw everything out. But that sounds like a last resort. Don't forget to clean everything in your bedroom. Everything in your closet, your bed frame, night stands, dresser, and anywhere else they could have hidden.

This was so not the thread to open before going to bed. Good luck!

  • Bed bugs are for sure disgusting, but it's not a reflection of you guys.

On the travel board people suggested placing luggage and contents in a black trash bag, tying it tightly shut and leaving it in the hot car for a few days is an effective way to kill them before bringing them in the house.  Of course, this doesn't do much good this time of year...

HAHAHA This was me too! Only it was a "flea bitten mutt" that my mom couldn't believe I let sleep in my bed hehe.  I never had lice, but I did have fleas a couple times in elementary school....looking back, I think I would have been mortified if I was my mom!

As far as the bedbugs go - I think you're doing all the right stuff to steam them out and get rid of the mattress.  Would one of those plastic zipper bag things you can put the mattress in to keep pee off them work to quarantine the mattress you're currently using?  I think my friend got one at Fred Meyer's or Target for not very much when her son was potty training and refused to sleep in his own bed.

     Good luck!!
