Primer recommendations?

For your face, that is.

I've been using The Present by Philosophy, but I'm considering trying something new.  Any suggestions?

Re: Primer recommendations?

  • I've been using the Laura Mercier primer that came in the Flawless Face kit and I really like it so far.

  • Love Too Faced Primed and Poreless.

    We're kind of going out.
  • Is this something I need to be doing? I've never felt the need before, but I'm all for anything that makes me purtier.

  • right now I'm using Laura Mercier because I got a free sample.  I've also used smashbox (they have several), MAC, Loreal, Clarins and Hourglass (soo smooth but $$).  They have all worked well for me.

  • Anti-rec: I've used Bare Essentials (Escentuals?) and cannot tell any difference.

  • I need them too. I use Stila but I hate them even though I love the product. When it runs out I'm switching. I need something similar.
  • I never use primer either, but it intrigues me. I don't know, though.. I have sh*tty skin (uneven tone, blah texture,, large pores, breakout-prone), so I try not to put a ton of stuff on it to make it worse.

Eye makeup is where I let the product run wild.

  • Too.many.choices.  This is too hard.

On a side note, a coworker who has been gone for 6 months came back today and told me I look "younger for some reason".  And then someone else said I looked fabulous and asked my secret.  I told them both, "Makeup."  Lolz.

  • I use a primer and foundation in one called perfekt beauty.  It is what I let Hezz play with at the Shoar.  I love it.  Spehora sells it as a primer only, but it is wonderful stuff and so light.  www.perfektbeauty.com

I know this is a stupid question being a Barbizon grad and all but what exactly is primer for? I thought foundations are supposed to be so advanced these days you wouldn't need anything else. I mean in my mind I'm picturing spackle and that plus foundation sounds like a lot to put on the average face, no? Almost like a Dermablend amount of stuff. And could it be used as your foundation then instead? And why would it be better than just foundation in the first place?
  • TSD -- it's supposed to even your skin texture, minimize pores, and basically give foundation a smooth surface to be applied to.  Most I've seen are clear gels or non-colored lotions  so they wouldn't work as a foundation.  Again, I don't see much difference but I might have used a bad one.

  • I used to use a 'mattifier' by Benefit that I think is kind of like a primer.  I think it made a big difference and I have no idea why I didn't buy more when it ran out and keep using it.  I definitely need to give it another try so I appreciate this post.
  • Cali, the Laura Mercier primer is a 100 point gift at Sephora now, if you wanted to try it.

  • Is it too late to add to this?
Cali, I've used the Laura Mercier one, it's very nice. I also really liked the one EAB let me use at the shore, Perfekt. That was really light and silky. Smashbox is supposed to be where it's at and they have a ton of different formulas to choose from.

I just started using something called Amazing Cosmetics Anti-Aging Face Primer. It's more of a clear gel compared to some of the other stuff I've used. But, this stuff is crazy, it practically erases my wrinkles.

I recently went on a Sephora crazed spending spree, so I have a lot of product reviews coming up...  :)

  • I love smash box photo finish. Also have used shiseido smoothing veil as a primer and loved it. I have generally been more unhappy with drugstore primers tha. Other drugstore makeup

  • Sadly, no. You don't have a rewards card at Sephora? You earn points with your purchases and you got samples at every 100 points.

  • Of course I don't have a rewards card.  I've only been to Sephora twice in my life.  This whole makeup thing is very new to me.
