random work question - email requests

do you handle emails immediately/as they come in or do you address them periodically throughout the day - like the last 15 minutes of every hour or something?

Re: random work question - email requests

  • I'm constantly checking emails but not always responding.  If it's a quick answer (or TBH if I like the person), I generally respond right away.  If it's more complex or something I just don't feel like dealing with, I leave the email "bolded" (unread) to come back to it later in the day/week.

If it's a personal email, I'm pretty much always responding though.  Stick out tongue

  • I check my email constantly, too, but I don't always respond right away. It really depends on what the email is. However, I respond within 24 hours max.

  • I mostly answer emails as they are coming in, even if it's a request that might take some time I'll go back with a quick, "got it, I'll get back to you ASAP" because I like to at least acknowledge that I've seen the request. Since pretty much all that I do now is answer requests for info and attend meetings, there are certain people that I'm comfortable with that I will say "ok, got it, if I don't get back to you by X then remind me again"

  • I pretty much check them constantly throughout the day and I respond immediately. I'm also in charge of building complaints, so it's my job to basically check email constantly.

This is exactly what I do.  If I'm in the lab when important emails comes through, I'll respond with a quick email about being in the lab and sorry for the delay.

I don't like to wait for people to answer my emailed questions, so I treat others as I want to be treated.  (Yup, I sound like a kindergartener).

  • I rarely get emails. If I do, they are usually copies of tasks that just got sent to my task box (don't require a response). If someone does email me a question, I usually will answer it right away.

Ditto!!!  If I'm traveling, I'll respond via my iphone and say that I got it and will respond once I get home/office.

  • Given the nature of my job I can't always respond (or even check email for that matter).  I hate things left hanging, so I will always reply as soon as I get a chance, which is usually on my planning period.

  • I have an insane amount of emails come to me everyday.  I'm an Account Manager.  I respond ASAP to at least acknowledge the request.  Often I flag stuff to come back to at a later date if I'm extremely over my head.
