DH and I have never been and are thinking about going the last week of May.
We'd like to do a lot of hiking- should we rent a car for the week, or is it possible to get to popular hiking areas on foot or a short cab ride? DH is opposed to renting a car, fwiw, and I'm opposed to having to get lots of cabs.
We're leaning against an AI- we've done one before (a 5 star in Mexico) and felt it wasn't worth the added expense. Assuming we don't do AI in Jamaica, will it be easy to find a variety of inexpensive places to eat, or will we be mostly confined to our resort? Is there some reason an AI would be preferred in Jamaica?
If you had $1000 to spend on 6 nights (not including food)- what resort would you stay at?
We'd like to see a lot on foot- is there an area on the island where that is more possible- e.g. resorts close to the "action" in Negril or Ocho Rios?
What is the difference between Negril and Ocho Rios? Would it be a good idea to split the vacation half in Negril, half in Ocho Rios?
Sorry this is sortof long- we're really clueless about this island! Thanks!

My Wedding Bio
I've only been to Jamaica twice - once to Montego Bay and next to Negril, and both times to AIs since we like going here for a relaxing vacation (instead of our typical backpacking/adventure trips). From my limited experience there, it's probably safe to explore the island on your own. I think it's also better and more convenient to hire your own taxi rather than drive those roads or use public transport.
Negril is known for beaches and cliffs. We stayed at Breezes Grand Negril and had amazing beaches and off shore snorkeling. We also went to Rick's Cafe to jump the cliffs - a bit of adventure for us!
From my research, the beaches at Ocho Rios are not as good but then you have more of the adventures - like climbing falls, hiking, etc.
Hope you go and have fun!
I've been to Jamaica and I agree with people. I would not drive there. I would rent a private taxi for the week. They don't have stop lights there and the roads only have room for 1 car so you have to pull over constantly and vice versa to let people go by. It's pretty scary. Seriously.
Also, not the safest place to go hiking solo. I would definitely want a guide with us on excursions.
