travel cards

DH and I are thinking about getting a travel card. Our families are in Florida and it looks like we will be heading over there a few times this year.

I have no idea which card is best...

Any recommendations?

  • My only suggestion is to look at which major carriers fly to the airport you'd be using and look into their cards.

I use to religiously use my BOA Alaska Airlines card. But I lived in AK and airline options there are limited.

I now get points through my Wells Fargo debit and credit card and can cash them in on any airlines I'd like.

cc are so far from my mind, my first thought was, omg, you can pick a place and by a travel card and no matter what, it's always the same price for your flights? lol. sarack fail.

btw, i've heard AMAZING things about the alaska airlines one and the buddy pass! i vote that one!

  • I would say AK Airlines - H has this one, and like someone else was saying, we use it for almost everything and just pay it off each month.  BofA (who has the AK Airlines card) also has their generic power rewards card so you can earn points and use it on more airlines than just AK and their affiliates, and there's no annual fee (AK has like a $75 annual fee)
  • h and i prefer cash-rewards for our credit cards. to us, we see it as the option to use it on whatever we want, including travel. our beat card is amex blue cash rewards.

*but* we do have the sothwest airlines one, because it came with a very good signing bonus, but i don't think sw flies to florida, so it might not be the best for you. we don't use the card, we only got it for the initial rewards.

  • Where in Florida, specifically?  I have both the Alaska Airlines Visa and the American Express Platinum as my travel cards and I would only recommend the Alaska Visa if you're either (1) flying to Miami or another Florida city that Alaska serves direct or (2) doing a lot of other traveling on Alaska routes.  I could be wrong, but I think the only Florida cities that Alaska serves are Miami and Orlando, so if those aren't the two cities you're traveling to, I'd look for other airline cards.  I'd probably pick the card by pricing out tickets throughout the year and looking to see what airline comes in least expensive on average, and then comparing the perks (for example, the Delta and United credit cards give you one free checked bag each time, so if you know you're going to check bags that can be valuable).

Keep in mind that setting up a mileage account with pretty much any major US carrier will allow you to earn miles (which can be deposited into your account) with their partner airlines.  So, if you set up a mileage account with Alaska, you can fly Delta and American and accrue miles in your Alaska account; if you set up a mileage account with United you can fly Continental (merging with United anyway) and US Airways.  I much prefer the service I get with Delta and American so I'm loyal to that group and refuse to fly United / US Air.  The same holds true for their international partners, and you can use your miles to travel on their international carriers as well.  Rewards start at 50,000 miles and if you're trekking to Florida 3-4 times a year you'll pick up 15-20K miles a year, which means that you can get a free ticket to Europe in about 2-3 years.  Just something to think about - you'll almost always get better return on your miles booking international trips than you will with domestic flights.  :)

Feel free to PM me any time if you have questions about traveling / airlines / etc. as I know a lot about most of the domestic carriers.

  • Thanks Kimberly!!

I will look into all of this real soon!

I'll be sure to PM you!

I have tons of more questions...
