Gas range burner grates - how do you keep them clean?

Ladies, I've been struggling with this since we got our gas range over 4 years ago: keeping the grate things that are over the burners (similar to below) clean. Mine are a medium grey color, and they are always covered with black stuff that does NOT come off. Seriously, I have tried everything to get it off....every cleaner, scrub, even Easy Off oven cleaner. I have no idea what causes it because I don't really make a mess when cooking, but I can't get it off. Any tips? Thanks!

  • Have you tried soaking them overnight in a cleaning solution? Or just some liquid dish detergent? When mine get gross, I just pile them up in the sink and let them soak overnight with dish soap (I buy Dawn, can't remember what kind).

  • I put mine in the dishwasher and it helps.
  • I thought I read u put them in a ziplock bag full of vinegar overnite
  • Seal them in a ziploc bag with a splash of ammonia overnight.  Make sure to keep them in the sink or outside, and open the ziploc bags in a well-ventilated area.  Rinse them very thoroughly, but the gunk should just rinse off.  No scrubbing required.  I also run mine through the dishwasher periodically to get the grease off, but the ammonia works well for those stubborn stains.
