if traveling to mexico for a week, how much cash would you bring?

do you bring a credit card? do you bring a debit card? do you bring your wedding ring?

Re: traveling question: mexico

  • We usually don't take much cash - maybe $100. We usually just have it to shop at open air markets/tip bartenders and housekeeping.

We always bring a debit card and a credit card.

I've always worn my wedding rings.

  • when we want this last time we brought $500. be sure you exchange to pesos for a better deal.

bring your credit card, in case you run out of money or run into some reason you need it.

i wear fakes when i travel to "major" places, but i also didnt wear my fake e-ring, and wore just my fake wedding band for mexico, which is what i do in most foreign places.

  • We went to Mexico in 2007 and I think we brought 300-400 dollars that we exchanged when we got there. I think we also used our credit card a few times for dinners. I can't remember what I did about my rings. I actually don't think I wore any rings while I was there because I figured we'd spend so much time on the beach and in water.

Also, not sure if you know this, but contact your credit card company and bank if using a debit card to inform them you'll be using the card out of the country. Otherwise, they might deny any charges.

  • My fingers shrink and swell a lot, so i often wear a stand-in band when travelling (regardless of location).  I haven't been to Mexico, but i generally take cash in US dollars (enough for airport stuff and in case of emergencies), but use credit for the most part (or withdraw local currency from a bank).

  • We went to Cabo San Lucas in 2010 for about 4 days and brought $200 cash and didn't end up using it all. We did bring one credit card apiece (separate accounts) and a debit card. And I left my e-ring at home, but wore my wedding band. :)

Where in Mexico are you headed to?? :D

    This.

It's also a good idea to ask which ATMs you can use for free.  I know that for a lot of banks there are foreign banks that they work with so you can use an ATM from those specific banks without the service charge.

You should also ask what the foreign use charges will be if you use your card at a merchant or if there would be any depending on which ATM you use.

It would just really suck to be in some other country and have no access to your money because your card has been cancelled for fraud.

  • We usually just bring ~$100 in mostly 10s, 5s, and 1s, and pay mostly in credit card.

I always wear my normal rings in Mexico.

i'm not saying "don't do it", but h and i have *never* been stopped and we've never ever told our cc companies that we were leaving the country/state/city/wherever. but my dad has....of all places, he got his card declined in las vegas...we have *family* there and he's there 2-3x's a year...and one random occasion they decided to shut off his cards.  he was able to call and restore it within the hour, but it was still embarrassing for him!
