Head cold help!

Hi y'all! So I had the best vacation to my hometown of Austin Tejas and the day after we got back I got a gnarly head cold. I'm talking the sneezy, stuffy head, runny nose kind. I've taken Advil cold/flu and...no help. I've also tried Dimetapp, my go-to med that always seems to do the trick for night time and again...nothing. It feels as if I took nothing at all! I don't typically get these types of colds, so I'm all out of ideas. Anyone have any good experience with other OTC meds? I barely slept a wink last night b/c I kept having to blow my nose and sneeze. Naturally today had to be my first day back at work so I keep nodding off at my desk. ha! Sudafed maybe? TIA!!!

Re: Head cold help!

  • Sudafed...the kind you have to get behind the pharmacy counter and a sinus rinse or saline nose spray.

  • Sudafed.  But not the kind on the shelf.  The kind behind the pharmacy counter (no Rx needed).

Also, maybe some saline spray and/or a steam "facial" (boil some water and put it in a bowl and then let your face soak up all the steam) or steam room if you have access to one at a gym.

    Feel better!

  • Sounds similar to what I have had the last week.  I had the same experience with decongestents not working.  The only thing I found that helped was Afrin types of nasal sprays.  I did not use it one night and woke up every hour because I could not breathe.  I used it way longer than you are supposed to (too many days in a row) but I would not have survived without it.
  • I'd suggest the sudafed (the real stuff) or mucinex d. Although at the worst part of this cold even those didn't help me. I'm on day 5 now and the medicines are finally starting to give me some relief. Although now I've got a slight cough and ears are still full. Hope you get some relief soon. This bug going around is pretty miserable.
  • yucky!  I'm sorry Ili...could it be a full on sinus infection that requires an Rx?  I would also try the nasal sprays because the swelling could be the biggest issue and Mucinex D also with tons of water.  hugs girl!

  • NeilMed Sinus Rinse and a cold medicine with Ibuprofen in it (for the swelling)

    Feel better!
