overseas and netflix

We just got to Japan a couple weeks ago and have been using our Netflix to watch tv. All of a sudden today is says Netflix hasn't come to this part of the world yet and we can't access our account. Has anyone had this problem overseas? Were you able to fix it and if so, how? I miss my tv shows Crying Thanks!

Re: overseas and netflix

  • We couldn't use it in England, either. Sucked.
  • most countries do not have the licences to show american shows/movies through streaming avenues.

I know in Germany, SOME bases have worked around this, but off base you are SOL unless you get an IPO masking thingy (yes, I said thingy...I am not computer literate and let my DH deal with these issues).

You ALSO need to know your host countries rules about streaming and downloading.  The average fee is 900 euros over here.

  • Thanks for the info! DH handles all the techincal issues too, I have no clue about any of it. He did a bunch of googling and found he could mask the IP address but it costs a couple hundred a month to do it. So far we found the cheapest thing to do is just purchase the cable package from Americable, so it looks like that is what I will be doing tomorrow.

  • We couldn't use Netflix in Japan either, or even other streaming sites. Sometimes there are Youtube videos that wouldn't work too. We found the easiest way for us to watch our tv shows was to hook up our laptop to the tv and stream from the internet(we found websites that actually worked), we got to watch shows hours after they came out in the US.
  • We used a free proxy server while we were overseas. I forget what it was called, but if you google "free proxy server" you get a ton of results.

  • Also, you can use sidereel.com to find streaming copies of your shows. We ditched cable a long time ago and we watch everything on Sidereel/megavideo now.

  • Ditto thefree proxy server!  I have seen people leave the Post Office with Netflix, so I know it's possible to get the hard copies at an APO/FPO address.  Good luck!

  • Yep, you need a proxy to watch anything like netflix or hulu.  The downside is that proxies, especially the free ones, are usually quite slow.

I used to pay $5/month for a service that was pretty darn good.  Unfortunately, they doubled their price while also becoming less reliable, so I can't recommend them.

I did use the netflix disks for awhile, but I rarely used them, and the turnaround time was about a week or more, so I cancelled.  They will ship to APOs, but they're stuck at the same mail speeds as everyone else.

What's this 900 euro fee?  Is that for illegal downloads?

  • Thanks everyone! I have told DH everything you all said worked for you, and he is going to be doing some googling trying to find a way that we don't have to get cable.
I also don't get the fee. What exactly would that be for?
