Renfe/AVE quesiton

For anyone that has traveled the AVE train in Spain, how does the luggage work? Do you keep it by you for the duration of the ride?  Or is it checked like on an airplane.
I was looking at the renfe website & from what I gather you can have up to 3 bags (that do not exceed 250 cm total) & do not exceed 20 kg total (only 44 lbs :S  I better think about how I'm going to back for 2 weeks with so little weight!)
Not sure if this matters but we will be taking the train from Madrid to Granada.

TIA

Re: Renfe/AVE quesiton

  • We just took the train from Madrid to Barcelona, and kept our bags with us. It wasn't a problem - there were luggage racks on each car. They didn't weigh our bags at any time, and we definitely had more than 44lbs each.
  • In Madrid, the only thing they did with our bags was scan them (like how you do with carryon bags here in the US at the airport). Other than that, we just carried them on that train and put them on the luggage racks. It's just like if you were riding the Amtrak here in the States. There was no weighing of bags at all. We saw lots of people carry on ridiculous sized bags and items.
