New York City Hotel Recs?

I am looking for recommendations for a hotel to stay in NYC. I will be going on a girls weekend with my mom and sister the last weekend in Jan. We would probably like to stay fairly close to Time Square and/or the sights and keep it realitivly cheap.

Also if you have any suggestions of must see or do things while we are there I would appreciate any suggestions!

 TIA!

Re: New York City Hotel Recs?

  • I always priceline the Times Square area. In 2001 I was able to get the Hyatt Times Square for $100 on two different occasions. We went back in 2006 and had a heck of a time finding anything reasonable- we ended up in a dive Holiday Inn in Midtown for $250 one night, and another night $150 at a very nice Holiday Inn in the Financial District. While the Financial District is quiet, we didn't mind just hopping a quick subway to a more hopping area. Check out betterbidding.com and see what the hotels are  bidding for in Times Square and go for it!
  • there's a sticky post on the NYC board, i highly recommend reading it as there are tons of recommendations for sightseeing and restaurants.

i've stayed at the new yorker (near penn station) which is very convenient. not sure of cost as i was tagging along on DH's work trip. the best you will probably do in manhattan is $200/night. i'd look into hotwire or priceline.

  • We have stayed at both the Jewel facing Rockefeller, and loved it. The hotel is across the street from Rockefeller and a block down to 5th ave. It was a 3 star but felt like a four star, rooms were updated and clean location was perfect.

We also stayed at the Algonquin (New Yor'ks oldest hotel) It was a 4 star and it was nice and clean. The rooms however were tiny. This hotel was closer to Times Square.

Between the 2 I'd still choose the Jewel. Also we won these on Priceline as well. Paid less than half retail on the hotels.

On our trip we went to the

Met( you can pay whatever you want for tix, they do however have a suggested price),

The Moma Free Fridays after 4(of course it is hectic),

We had lunch at Jean George ( rated the 3rd or 8th best restaraunt in the US, lunch prix fixe is only $32 I think)

Had a pretheater meal at Capital Grill, then saw Wicked on Broadway

Went to Top of the Rock at night

Walked 5th and went to FAO, Tiffanys, Saks, St Patrick's Cathedral

Had lunch at a hot dog stand, Shake Shack. Had dessert at Serendipity 2. Favoorite meal there was at Buddaken( where carrie and Big help their rehersal dinner)

I hope to visit NY again , hopefully in December to see all the holiday decorations

  • We just came back from NYC yesterday and stayed at Stay which was literally 10 steps away from Times Sq (on 47th).  We paid $170/night.  It has a trendy vibe and was very clean.  Be warned rooms are small though!  I would definitely stay there again.  I've also stayed at Affina on 6th by Penn Station many times.  Rooms are bigger and you can get for around $200/night.
  • I stayed at The Mansfield and The Shoreham. Both were nice. The rooms are tiny which is typical but it was walking distance to most things we wanted to do and  they both had free coffee drinks!
  • The W! But it is pricey

  • I forgot to also mention the Doubletree Suites Times Square. The rooms were the largest I've seen in NY so good for sharing. And it's literally right in the middle of TS. However, this didn't make for quiet sleep.
  • I don't know hotels in that area because as a native NYer I've never had to stay overnight nor do I like to be near Times Square because it is a madhouse. But I can recommend some stuff to go to.

    Restaurants:

Alice's Tea Cup - There's more than one location and they are all super cute and a great lunch spot.

Spring Street Natural - My favorite restaurant of all time (so I'm a little biased), but the food is great continental meets Asian themed stuff. Made from local products and very reasonably priced. Also a couple of blocks from Soho shopping. Love their mangoritas!

Max Brenner - A chocolate restaurant in Union Square. There are locations all over the country, but if you've never been it'll be a fun trip. Killer chocolate martinis!

Besides 5th/Madison Avenue, Soho (Broadway below Houston) is a great area to shop with not only the designer and botique shops but more affordable things as well. Bleeker street also has some great shops around 11th St. plus Magnolia Baker is very close to there.

Then for sightseeing I'd definitely go to Central Park, The Metropolitain Museum of Art, and the Natural History Museum.

  • tagging for my upcoming trip. thanks!
