I currently have a valid passport in my maiden name (issued in 2008). So, since I changed my name when married and the original passport was issued more than a year ago, I have to pay the free for the new married name passport.
The D-82 for instructions say that: "The full name and date of birth of the applicate must be typed or printed on the front of the check".
I have neither on my checks. Do you think I can handwrite (=print since type is also listed in the statement above?) my info at the bottom left of the check?
I need to get my app in and don't want to wait to have to order new checks.

that's my advice then
I'm pretty sure they mean you can hand write it.
After all, they say that you can type it onto your check, so it's not like they need it to be put there by any kind of official source. And "full name and date of birth"? I don't know of anyone who has their date of birth printed on their checks. Even if you went and bought a money order or bank check, it wouldn't have your date of birth printed on it. You'd have to ask them to squeeze it with your name or address.
They probably just want you to do this so that if the check and the application ever get separated, they don't have a nightmare trying to trace the payment back to the application it belongs with. A legible (hence the "typed or printed") name and birth date makes it much simpler to track whose payment it is. Especially since a lot of people don't have their full name printed on their checks (mine just have my commonly-used nickname rather than my full legal name).
You can hand write it.
DH does not have checks, so I wrote the check, put the info on the memo line and sent it in last month. He already has his new passport.
Thanks, I am aware of that. A new passport (book only, not book and card) is $110. I'd rather pay the $110 for the new passport port and have the names match on all of my documentation (mainly passport name to be the same as credit card names). Although we don't have any plans for trips like this planned I'd be concerned about...there are pass trips I've taken that I would have be scared not to have the 2 match.

Your check has to have a name and address pre-printed on it (not handwritten) -- doesn't matter whose name it is, it just has to be pre-printed.
You can hand write your name and dob in the memo line.
I worked at the passport agency until last month, so I'm a pretty reliable source of info.
