Can someone school me on Pinterest?

I don't get it.  I look at other people's walls and can "repin" things that I like onto mine but is that it?

  • You can pretty much re-pin a photo from any website/blog and give it your own descrpition.  You have to install the "pin-it" button into your browswer, which is very simple if you follow the directions.  You can also explore by topic like DIY, womens apparel, home decor, kids, crafts, etc.  You can also search for things like "short hairstyles, blue bathrooms, etc" anything you can think of that you want a picture/inspiration of and it will hit off of the pins description.

  • Thank you for posting this. I just signed on last week, now I just need to install the pin it button.

  • I'm not that huge into it because we can't access it at work (as an FYI) so it's kind of useless to me.  I pin stuff from other people's boards at home and whenever I'm on our desktop i'll pin stuff from the web, but its not natural for me to do it. If we could use it at work i'd be all over it.  You can pin almost anything - a recipe, pictures, etc.  It seems great but kind of useless for me overall, since I do most of my internet browsing at work.

I know, it's a bummer that it's blocked at work.

  • I use it a lot to keep bookmarks and have a virtual style board for lots of topics.  I will say that as more and more people are using it, the general pins are becoming stupid, IMO.  There's no need to pin the cover of a book because you like it.  Maybe if you have a "Must read" board but not because you like it.  But that's just because I see Pinterest as an source of inspiration and a perfect-world to-do list, not a collage of stuff I have/like.

Also think twice about pinning stuff that doesn't have archivable link.  I pin a lot of recipes and a lot of people will pin stuff from Tastespotting.  Except, that photo you pinned will cease to be associated with the link for Tastespotting's front page in less than a day.  It's better to go back to the source and pin from there--that link will be there for you to go back to until the page dies (or the owner screws with it).

  • There is a free Pinterest app for smart phones Big Smile  It has most of the same features as the non-app.  I use it a lot on the train during my commute.  I'm with you BGB, it's also annoying to do the general explore tab and see the same thing (hairstyle/project) pinned like 5 or 6 times in a row.  I do like the search feature though, I've searched a few paint colors I was considering for rooms and it gave me quite a few real-life examples so I got a good idea of the different variations of the color depending on the room/lighting/etc.  I've also found a TON of really cute kid craft ideas and craft-gift ideas for kids for the grandparents.

I haven't used the search function yet but it sounds really useful!
