Tuscany?

H and I are planning a trip to Italy in October for our anniversary.  We'll probably use a travel agent, but I was wondering if anyone had any recs of things I should do or see.  We'll have about a week (I know, not a lot of time, but with limited vacation time it's about all we can take at a time).  It's my first trip there, but H has been before.  Aside from the super touristy stuff, what other recs do you have for me?

Re: Tuscany?

  • just a question-you said you want tuscany but then ask what should you see/do there. Any reason you chose tuscany? is there anything in particular you've already researched that you want to do?
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Tuscany is H's idea lol.  Honestly, though, we want to go to the wineries, etc.  My cousin went there for his honeymoon and they took a cooking class and went to the wineries and had a great time.  Hey, if you have other Italy suggestions, I'll take those as well, I just figured I'd try to narrow it down a bit.

  • Tuscany was my favorite part of my trip to Italy.  We stayed in an agriturismo, it was great. I'd highly recommend that.

Keep in mind that English is not widely spoken (opposed to the major cities) and you'll need to rent a car to drive everywhere.  Fortunately for us, H's cousin met up with us while in Tuscany and she speaks fluent Italian and had a car, so she brought us around everywhere, so that made things a bit easier for us.

I wish we had taken a cooking class, but honestly, just going into the small towns and taking in the scenery was my favorite part.

Oh one thing you should know - each town has a specialty - whether it's a certain type of pasta, dish, dessert, etc.  I don't have the list anymore, but try to research that.  Knowing we were trying the towns' signature dishes allowed us to sample some terrific food.

  • i've been to many places in tuscany and love it. i disagree with the PP=you absolutely do not NEED to rent a car. you can, of course, but bad idea if you're planning on both doing wine tastings. you can hire drivers to take you anywhere you wish to go and taste freely with out worrying about the drunk driving hassle.

i really enjoyed lucca, siena, radda, greve, castellina and volterra. we stayed in florence for a few nights (my 2nd time there) and then spent a week in radda exploring tuscany and it was lovely. we had considered staying in a B&B but ultimately chose not to as we wanted a town with a few resttaurants, shops, enotecas so that we wouldn't have to eat at the same place every day for a week. best choice ever. i did take a cooking class in the restaurant of my hotel there-the old 13th century kitchen and it was fabulous!!  let me know if you want more info on where we stayed and our itinerary.

  • We stayed at Casa Cornacchi on our last trip and took a cooking class there.  It was great!  The accomodations were wonderful too...the dinners were amazing.  If you like wine, do a cellar tour followed by lunch with wine pairings at Avignonesi winery...they have a website and you can make reservations by email.
