To stitch or not to stitch? - PIP - Warning slightly graphic picture

Louie came home from daycare last week with a piece of fur/skin missing. They said he didn't get into a fight and that the only thing they can think of is that while he was running circles (he tries to get EVERY dog there to chase him) another dog must have nipped at him and gotten a mouthful of fur. It seemed to be healing but then started bleeding again yesterday. Took him into the vet who cleaned up the wound again and put him on antibiotics. We have 2 options....let it heal by itself and clean out the wound 2-3 times per day for 3-4 weeks....or pay about $200 to have him get stitches and heal in 2-3 days. Any of you gone through something like this before? If you let it heal on its own, by the end of week 3 were you wishing you had just paid the money and been done with it?
